ParticipantIt depends where you project yourself to be when it comes to djing skills in say 1-2 years. For me, after putting out tons of money for speakers & laptops(s), and already having the Pioneed DDJ SB, I recently decided to spend the money on the upgraded Serato. My goal is to perfect the skills I have on the SB. I have come to realize that there were and still are several things I don’t even use yet on that device. Not to mention, the full Serato allows you to record, use additional effects, and has a few other features that can help you to maximize your skills.
However, if you feel like your dj skills are gonna get bored with the Mixtrack Pro 2, then by all means upgrade the controller and get one that comes with full Serato. You will shell out more money now, but you could save in the long run. Again, it all depends on when you see yourself needing or wanting to upgrade based on your skills. Hope this long explanation helps.

ModeratorActually, the recording feature would be one of the greatest bonuses of the full software for beginning DJs. As said in all DDJT courses, on the blog and here, ALWAYS record your mixes, even your practice runs if you have the option. Listening it back will give you TONS of information on what you did right and what you need to change/improve.
Wether it’s handier from a financial perspective to buy a better controller which comes with the full software or to upgrade the software seperately and later upgrade your controller that will then come with software you have already bought … is up to you!

ParticipantAgree’d with Vintage on recording yourself. It’s amazing how I’ll listen back and think, that those two tracks really blended well together, so I’ll keep that in the back of my mind for when I’m playing out. It’s also showed me where I might have not transitioned well, or maybe let the energy down when I hadn’t meant to. Lots of good information to be had when listening to your own mixes.

ParticipantYes, Recording itself is one of the biggest bonuses of the full paid software. While the full version brings other new features too, you don’t necessarily need to upgrade your controller: consider getting a small accessory controller, such as Korg nanopad, or AKAI propad, in which you can map new features, such as loop-rolls, more hotcues etc. features not found on your current controller. They’re not expensive, especially if found on second hand, and very easy to map.

ParticipantSo last night went pretty well. got lots of good feedback but negative also, which is good. I really didn’t do nothing to special other than do my best at beatmatching and try to transition the best possible. Got a question on this also. I noticed when transitioning from a lower BPM to a higher (or vice versa), during the song i’d slowly increase or decrease so the next song don’t song too funny. i did this because it just didn’t sound right and usually it’s for request. But there were times where i’d find a song with an acapella begining and slowly fade out last song.
Couple of problems before i even started though. 1) i didn’t have the right cables to connect to monitors to mix track pro 2, but ended up using their controller (DDJ-SX) which i sort of figured out. the plus side, i downloaded Serato DJ and got a chance to see what the full program is like.
But thanks again for everyone tips and all the information on forum. i just need more practice as i do know i can’t Dj overnight.

ParticipantAny tips for using loops or just the pads itself? i was trying to mess with them between songs but i just ended up using the top left pad to practice beat matching rather using the cue button.
got more feedback today. everyone liked the new vibe or the different sounding music, perfect for a sunday. said song selection was good as transition were pretty good (i did mess up quite a bit though). i also realize i need to broaden my music selection because i had lots of request that i didn’t have (did have other request other than Hawaiian/Reggae) like ska, hip hop, rap, r&b, country, rock. it was rough transitioning between them and going back to island music.

ModeratorMight wanna pick up microphone skills. Sometimes it eases things a little if you interact with the crowd a bit. After your microphone bit you can then start something entirely different. It’s a time-honored trick that mobile DJs have mastered since forever.

ParticipantWell, you CAN record using Serato DJ Intro as well: https://support.serato.com/hc/en-us/articles/202304744-Recording-your-mix-with-Audacity
And I have the same setup as you.. although I do have the full Serato DJ. I found the Intro version pretty complete for my sets. What I would say is keep practicing and upgrade to a controller that comes with the full Serato DJ when you outgrow the MTP2.

ParticipantI just started the free trial and tried recording as i wanted to listen how my beat mataching was. when i played back, i had no sound. i have a windows laptop (windows 8.1). i’ve also tried to record with Serato DJ on a pioneer DDJ-sx and same thing, no sound.
any clue what’s going on?

ParticipantImport your recording in Serato DJ and have a look at the waveform. If it matches other music, your recording is fine and you have some other problem. If there is no waveform to look at, then there is a problem with your recording. I can’t figure out what the problem is, maybe you could take a screenshot and put it here?

ModeratorCould it be that you are trying to play back from windows media player, but with the soundcard still set to output to another source (like the SX?). Quicknight’s suggestion is a good one.
