If you plan on playing out a lot, keep it as backup. It’s small enough to take with you as a spare controller to your gigs. Something happens to the SX, you’ve got a backup. Never assume because it says Pioneer (or Denon, Numark, Reloop, whatever) that it can’t break down. Also rest assured that Murphy does not think any kinder of DJs than he does of normal folks. His laws apply. Therefore, if something can break, it will and and the worst possible time.

I still carry around enough gear (except for a full PA, but all three my speakers are active) to get me through any gig, regardless of what major components break down.

For what I know of the VMS2, the secondhand market isn’t too hot, with it being not all that expensive as a new product, so I doubt it would make you lots of money and/or devaluate a lot if you hang on to it a bit longer.

Thanks DJ Vintage! Your insight was thoughtful and made a lot of sense. I guess it won’t hurt to keep it as a backup. I have a question to you based on your response: Do you you have an extended warranty/insurance on your equipment in case any of it breaks on a gig? I’m worried now because I don’t and fixing this DDJSX will probably burn a hole in my pockets.

Nope, the only people I know that have that are venues which need their stuff working 24/7. They are paying top dollar for the service too.

Modern day electronics don’t break down often and as long as you have a backup plan, the resulting discomfort to you and the gig needn’t be very big. Here we have two year warranty and that is enough for me. If it breaks down after that it’s either replace (depending on age and current state) or have it repaired. Here in Holland we have a place that repairs DJ equipment specifically. You call them, the transport company picks it up at your house, they fix it and ship it back. All in a relatively short period of time. That is enough insurance for me. If, during the repair period, I don’t want to be without at gigs I have, I’ll go and rent or borrow something.

    Hope that helps.

I’m working on backups right now… at the moment my backup is an analog mixer and an iPod, working on a cd/media player or possibly a pair. Also going to add to my PA with a second sub and also a 3rd top. I have a Reloop TM8 coming, when I get it, I will likely still use the mixtrack pro 2 for small house parties and such, as well as practice and home sessions some. My advice would be to keep it, and use it for smaller gigs, practicing, and backup. Keep shining, Moonshadow

one last though, there may also be times when the SX is physically too big for the situation, the smaller controller may come in handy.
