I was a diehard Windows DJ. Get the MBP. I switched to a 2012 MBP last year and I was shocked at the difference. That was before I added more RAM and an SSD.

    Thanks for the reply..

How did you go about moving your crates etc?

Well, there’s a learning curve when switching to Mac but you can pretty much treat it like a Windows machine. For instance, I never used iTunes to organize my tunes preferring to use folders and subfolders. You can still do that on a Mac. I organize my music on a Windows machine then sync the whole folder with my Mac using “free file sync”. The only hitch in a mixed OS household is that any Windows drive you want to write to from a Mac needs to be formatted in exFat so both operating systems can read and write to them. I use VDJ 8 and importing my profile was simple. Overall the switch is totally worth it and it’s easy – there are tons of online resources.

    Thanks for that.

I’ve just text the Mrs to keep an eye out for reconditioned MbP’s on groupon. That’s one way of dropping the hint that I want one.

    Thanks again?

If you talk crates I guess you talk Serato… check the Serato website there is a video (or youtube) how to move crates from Windows to Mac.

Changing a processor in a laptop is not something I’d take to lightly (and I am in IT). Upgrading RAM and an SSD are not big problems. And chances are you’ll need to upgrade your used MBP with those two things, so that takes it out of the equation.

I don’t want to rehash the MAC vs Windows discussion and you can make both to do the things you need to do. However, imho, there are a few features with an MBP and OSX that make it more suitable for music related business in general and for DJ-ing in particular.

Price is an issue, agreed, but they seem to keep their value longer, even when reselling the used MBP two years down the line.

I find that some gear asio drivers aren’t as good as others but the same gear plugged into my mac all behave the same with no lag. That’s the classic argument for mac’s with regard to audio production, they “just work”.

Yes. Also aggregate audio is so much better on a mac as well, so adding something with an extra sound card is easy, like adding two CDJs to a DDJ-SX.
