It goes back to the articles I wrote on how to succeed, when you go beyond gigs and promote yourself online. I didn’t want to bog down my regular blog with short posts and links to other stuff, so I use tumblr to post short 2-min clips of tunes I am into as well as links to new articles I write and articles/sites I come across that I think are cool. Every Friday I only post YouTube clips of old school music (Old School Friday).

    The benefit is it’s another line in the water. Some people who surf tumblr or just the web in general can come across this, possibly get into it, and there on the right side are links to other social media outlets of mine as well as my website.

    Since I’m not into producing music, content creation is a stronger point for me.

    Haha! I couldn’t connect the dots between your tumblr page and yourself! Sorry for the confusion. Haha. Pretty nice. I’m surfing around for some nice tracks.

Aly & Fila come to mind as a few of the only remaining DJ’s of that style… I’m sure there are many more around, but not with any sort of commercial success.

    As long as the melodic sounds stay in music, im not too picky about what genre its in. At this point its starting to look like prog house is gonna be the most melodic, while trance is seeming to get a more tech/hard dance feel to it.

    At least thats how I feel.

    what about daniel kandi? his style is never old…

    Ive been into trance and prog house since early 90s. I agree with the earlier comment, that trance has thankfully become more techier and less cheesier/formulaic than it was towards end of the 90’s. However, WTF has happened to prog house, its become more fluffy and cheesier.

    Apart from the Plethora of Trance Producers still Working today;
    You wouldn’t be Disappointed in checking out ‘James Dymond’ on YouTube; signed in 2010 and now making it Big 🙂

    I live for Trance and Progressive. That’s what I truly want to spin when I go up on stage. However, because I’m not Markus Schulz or AVB I could’t land a crowd that cared for years.

    It’s just more underground now. The downer though is that the crowds/fans only seem to like it if it’s coming from a major headliner. It’s still hard for newer guys to really break in.

    This is so true here in LA. Although I must share that i hooked up with a really underground bunch a few weeks ago and they had me spin at a desert rave this past Sunday, and they loved my Trance set. I think this weekend was a turning point for me now that I found this group. They throw raves in the midwest as well, so I’m glad I found them.

    It seems to me that producing and making a name of one’s self through that avenue is what will get some people to respect Trance at a big event. I say some because there are a lot of kids who say they hate Trance because it puts them to sleep.

    No complaints here, just my two cents regarding what I’ve noticed.

    My first ever experience with any EDM was trance when I was 12 and I borrowed an Ibiza Euphoria CD mixed by Matt Darey from my older brother. I’ve been hooked ever since, but recently found my niche in Progressive House. What’s crazy is that Matt Darey follows me on SoundCloud and after eleven years, it’s come full circle!

    I think in this genre/scene, producing is the way in. You make tunes that people notice and like, then it helps you grow. I will tell anyone though to not be surprised if you grow, but notice your hometown doesn’t seem to be as into you as other places. That’s just how it goes. I know guys here in Chicago that play for thousands in a big event somewhere on the other side of the globe, but end up playing for 50-100 people at the most here in Chicago. If a massive happens they’re not even booked.

    Such is the way of things. My suggestion is to produce, maybe get involved in a notable online radio station, do a regular thing, build the following, and eventually someone outside of your neck of the woods will bring you out to play.

    I even suggest to many to use your vacations as opportunities to play. I think I’ll start another topic on this.

    Wow, thats a pretty cool story. I could only hope to achieve something half that awesome in the future 🙂

    P.S, just finished mixing somewhat of a summer chillout mix… if anyone would be so kind as to check it out and leave some form of constructive criticism I would be extremely grateful! (sorry in advance for the beat matching catastrophe near the start)

    Can’t Wait for your Topic on that Subject D-Jam 🙂
    And I Agree With You Completely; in some cases; unless you have people ‘Behind You’ you can be just ‘One’ in a Pile Of Available DJ’s’; Certainly in a Club or Promoters Point Of View; and so to get ‘Your Name Out There’ through Remixes; Productions (sometimes Different; sometimes Radical); and Radio Shows; will get you ‘Noticed’; and then your ‘Love’; be it DJ’ing can be Expressed and Accepted as you already have Established Yourself in another Area;
    Such as; and Please Don’t Shoot Me Down; as it is Only An Opinion; but Carl Cox is Accepted as One of the Greatest DJ’s of Our Time (30 Years); but his Own Productions are Awful ! – But there is a Market for his Own Productions;
    I have recently heard a Press Release from Our Promoter at TranceX Global Radio (Un-named Due to Anonymity); who tells us that the ‘Trance Scene’ in Toronto is Dead; just through Constant Exposure; and people became Bored;
    This is Quite A Big Thing to happen really as Trance has been Established Worldwide for So Long;
    So; when you say that DJ’s are Travelling from Chicago to play Large Audiences; but the Audience isn’t at ‘Home’; I am Happy to Accept that this could be ‘Of Relevance’ to Us All;
    Thank You for your Post 🙂

    Edit:
    Both my Permanent Residency at TranceX Radio; and my Guest Spot tonight (Right Now) for Calvin Karass; which is actually a Massive Spot as Barbara Tucker has played on this Show (and she is No Fool); Came Just From My Remixes On YouTube

    Nice to have stumbled across this thread. I am often wondering what happened to the trance I knew and loved…I know sounds move on, but it’s not just an evolution of the sound with the balearic and uplifting trance of the late 90s (I am from Europe), it’s a complete confusion of name changes.

    These days, “trance” gives me a lot of vocal, big room and – someone said this before – formulaic tunes. I like above and beyond, for example, but I far prefer the stuff from their sublabel AnjunaDeep, than from AnjunaBeats. The “uplifting” goosebump-giving sound that I miss has now been renamed “progressive house”. There are a few niche places to find stuff like this, but the artists are few and far between; Shingo Nakamura is this teenager from Japan or Korea or something, he has real potential. Recently I found some things by Mizar B, Lessov, Walter Fierce and others, but although I find it easy to stay in touch with all the other scenes – be it house, disco, dubstep or DnB – Trance seems to have been relegated into shady YouTube channels filled with unknowns.

    When you do find it, like on some of the John Digweed “transitions” podcasts, it’s sandwiched between a load of other, albeit quality, non-trance. Why?

    I am currently listening to Walter Fierce – Memories of Tomorrow (Kid Broke Likes it Cosmic Mix) and this is a piece of genius; unique synths, good and driving, and nothing too mental. I just wish I could find a reliable set of compilations to stick on and know that most tunes would be of this calibre.

    First post on DDJT 🙂

    @Xeva – that conv with Darey is a touch! Nice one!

    Thanks for the welcome Emma. Sorry for appearing to have abandoned this thread, just had a bunch of stuff to do. Thanks

    I checked out Trance 2001, that was a top year 🙂

    I was doing some label searching on Spotify, came cross a couple of epic labels with defining releases: Platipus records (they brought out Moogwai – Viola – Original Mix which is one of my favourite tunes ever – ) and Hooj Tunes. Thomas Schwartz is also someone with some nice instruments: Thomas Schwartz – Jupiter Calling – Original Mix

    Sunday afternoon with some banging house playing; the missus will get to play her Country later on, ha ha 🙂
