ParticipantI was just in the same boat as you and ended up going with the NS6.
It really comes down to personal preference (If you can get a hand on both to try that would be great)I may try and put a side by side chart together (with input of other members) of the key and maybe even minute differences between the two. I don’t know how in a rush you are to make a purchase though.
Any specific questions I can help out with since I have been scrutinizing the two and still have it all fresh in my head?

ParticipantIf you are strickly EDM go with the S4 as the controller and Traktor is geared towards EDM.
As well if you are planning on expanding to CDJs you can just hook them directly to the S4. I dont know if you can with the NS6.

Memberthanks for your input guys.
@VinnyBlanc – No real questions spring to mind i guess it is just one of those i have to get a feel for them thing. I’m planning on going in to store to scope them out which should give me an idea of the hardware side of things. however I doubt they’ll have a full laptop+controller setup so i can get a feel for software and controller and if they do what can you really learn about software in 5 minutes. It’s just a shame that Serato needs hardware to run which kind of has me leaning towards Traktor.
@Hee Won Jung – Yeah i will be strictly EDM the closest I’d come to hiphop is thugstep or a bootleg of some description. I have heard that the S4 is better for EDM and that’s definitely a big factor for me. As far as connecting CDJ’s directly to the controller I believe the NS6 can as it is a standalone mixer as well but only in analogue mode – you can’t use Serato’s effects or use timecodes like you can with the S4 if you pick up the scratch pro upgrade.
I think I’m leaning towards the S4 at the moment but not by much, I just wish it had that same all metal build as the NS6. It may also be worth waiting a while to see if NI update the S4 it is getting reasonably old, or am i incorrect in thinking that controllers would be updated as regularly as most other computer based hardware?

KeymasterJust for the record, you can also plug your external hardware into the NS6.

ParticipantThe NS6 is a very very good unit when used with ITCH!
IMO the best hardware for Itch that money can buy.The NS6 is on the other hand not so good with Traktor IMO because the layout is for ITCH
and the layout is not good for Traktor as on other controllers.
You also pay for the ITCH software when buying NS6 wich is a waist if you do not use it!I suggest you deside what software to use before buying anything!
If you are good with ITCH then the NS6 is a very good choice IMO
If you want Traktor there is Denon MC6000/3000 and Native Instruments S4/S2
That is all good units IMODecember 22, 2011 at 1:35 pm #11787VinnyBlanc
ParticipantThere is a mapping of the NS6 available for traktor, but you lose two of the best features on the NS6. No strip search and you lose the resolution on the jogs.
If you are buying an NS6 for traktor I would think again!

Member@DJ Hessler I agree I definitely need to decide which software first, Serato just don’t make it easy since you can’t use their software without the hardware. At least traktor the software is fully operational on its own. I’m leaning towards traktor on moral grounds because it just kind of pisses me off that you can’t really try Serato before you buy unless you know someone using it and can use theirs.
@VinnyBlanc yeah i had heard you lost the resolution of the jogs, the search strip becomes a filter and the effects are crippled because there just isn’t enough corresponding hardware buttons like on the S4. I’d deifnitely be going with the S4 if I went with Traktor.
hmmm i guess this almost belongs in the software section for some Serato vs Traktor comparisons….I think I’ll probably end up with traktor just because it seems to be able to do more and though i won’t need most of it for a good while it’ll be handy down the track. If it was a matter of purely hardware i think i’d definitely go the NS6 but the S4 is winning the software front since i can actually play with it and it’s so tightly integrated with Traktor.

I could be wrong here but isnt all Serato software downloadable for free but is totally useless because you need a proper soundcard/controller to work with them. Which is why copies of Serato are included with the Soundcards?

There is an “offline” mode for itch where you can set cue points analzye files and beatgrids and modify loops and such, but it requires an Itch controller to be plugged in to utilize the actual functionality of the software.
And a cool trick I learned is anyone can download itch analyze all the files which will then give you BPM of all of your tracks which will populate in iTunes for you if you were missing this piece of metadata or didn’t have another way to get it.

yeah so you’re not really paying for the ITCH software itself, you’re paying for the ITCH certification of the hardware.

If you considder the S4 you might also first want to check the Denon MC6000 or MC3000.
They are a bit better in quality than S4 IMO.
Also a bit cheaper but that eats up because you have to buy the Traktor or VDJ software because only LE versions is bundled.
S4 is a very good controller but IMO Denon is a bit better so try before buy 🙂December 24, 2011 at 8:50 am #11865djrenots
ParticipantThe S4 has a new mapping making the jog wheels into cool sound effects wheels but the Denon has video capabilities as well. Go to DJtt to check out Ian’s video on the S4.

I was looking at those mappings last night, definitely look very cool. As I’m just a beginner I don’t think the video capabilities of the denon are too big of a deal, the same can be said of the booth outs as I’ll just be using the controller to learn on then expanding to CDJ’s + mixer as well. I really like the metal construction of the denon though. The plastic build is really the only drawback of the s4 for me. I think I’m going to wait for NAMM and see if anything exciting is announced and if not I’ll probably just go with the s4.

MemberAs far as I know from researches I’ve done on controllers, the NS6 is a huge win if you want to scratch a lot. Scratching is good for hip hop, funk, and other styles comming close to that. In the other case, I would go for the traktor s4
