More about the problem – If I lower the input gain in Traktor s/w to as low as -15db and adjust the hardware master gain knob on Kontrol S4 such that the controller gain is not clipping (no reds on the S4 meter), the external mixer gain shoots up and starts to clip full red. If you reduce the gain in the s/w or controller out, the external volume doesnt sound right and it sounds as if i am only playing bass – mids and highs are not too clear…

The work around that i am using which is not correct – using the trim and keep it at 12 o clock position on the Pioneer mixer and similar position for the master gain of the mixer. Use the external mixer’s channel EQ where I am connected and change the HIGH to 3 o clock, MID to 3 o clock and LOW to 9 o clock. Traktor s/w internal gain to about -15db to -12db and S4 h/w master gain to 12 o clock. This does the job for now but I would like to know the ideal settings for hooking up my S4 to a club mixer & PA.

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

My setup – Mackbook Pro i7, 4Gb RAM. TPro 2.1.3 with S4, 4 channel Pioneer external mixer

Check this article out first to get your Traktor settings correct ie the maximum sound level without distortion.

It sounds like you may have the mixer channel, you’re connected to, set as phono instead of line. It must be line for anything except vinyl turntables.

    Failing that….
Don’t touch the EQ’s for that mixer channel unless necessary. Start with the mixer gain all the way at the bottom and slowly raise the gain (fader off) in your headphones whilst watching the VU meter. I’ve never had any problem with it sounding like this. You can slightly twaek the mixer EQs if totally necessary but it shouldn’t be as you are adjusting the EQs in Traktor.

Thanks for that detailed reply Steelo! Yes, I currently connect to a line input, which i am going to switch to Phono as suggested. I will try to reconfigure the gain as suggested but do you see any possibility of this being a problem with how the external mixer is configured with the PA system. Reason being, the CDJs connected to the same mixer sound perfectly normal with no clipping or additional bass/hum.

Will keep you posted once I try out the Phono and the other settings recommended by you. Cheers, Dj Swap

Hold on! You don’t want phono…you want line. It sounds like you had it plugged in to phono when it should’ve been line. If that’s not the problem then I’m not really sure. Maybe try a different cable too? If not then its got to be something with your audio coming in way too hot. You could also try changing the mixer eq settings in Traktor. Xone will be the least bass heavy. I usually use Xone or the one above it for a bit more oomph.
