Currently only NI hardware (S4 or F1) will give you full sample deck functionality within the Traktor limits.

There are certain devices that have special firmware that has been reverse engineered to function with them (midi fighter 3D) and secondly there are some Traktor hacks out there to make them “sort of midi mappable”.
I have tried neither of those solutions myself, but reports are that they work good, at least the midi fighter thing.

Do you think NI will ever open it up to be easily mapped to third-party hardware?

With NI moving more down the hardware road I don’t think they’ll ever officially open the remix decks to 3rd party hardware. Like Terry I’ve heard good things about the midi fighters ability to tie in to the remix deck but I think it might still be in the beta stage. There are videos on YouTube for you to look at

NI Actually said that they were gonig to open it up to 3rd party devices in the near future once they can figure out how to make it mappable with out needing the 1:1 factor.

For our slightly more clueless readers (meaning me), what is the 1:1 factor?

1:1 factor is what the Kontrol S4 and S2 are…the controller is made to act directly with the software (no mapping required)
