I no longer use Traktor or any DVS but when I did use Traktor I stayed away from the keylock.
I tend to keep my BPM within 5 Beats of eachother bringing both BPMs toward eacthother and once the change over is done I can easily bring the new track back to it’s correct BPM.ready If I play Soulful/Deep House they tend to be between 123>127 so I’d bring the transition in at 125. That doesn’t mean I can’t drop in a 100bpm nor does it mean I always stick to Harmonic mixing in a set
Here’s a test you can do to see the difference BPM changes do to the Key, Record a 125bpm Track at 130bpm then analyse it to see what the key chage is
You need to remember that even tracks with the same key, bpm or both don’t always mix together. Harmonic mixing is just another tool but an interesting way of creating mixes. I’d read the articles on Harmonic mixing to get tips on things like jumping to a higher keys

Dont Rely and think that You HAVE to use songs that are in key…remember it is just a tool.

Mixing in Key is only important when you are mixing Synths, and Vocals. As well 1-5bpm difference will not really affect the key of the song.

Basslines also have a key signature but it is not as dominate and most people will not really notice if u are mixing 2 basslines that are out of key.

Harmonic mixing is really important if you are doing extended mixes…ie blending 2 tracks together for more than say 16-32 beats.

But also remember that its only really important if both tracks have synth lines or vocals layered with a Synth line in it.

so example…if track A is lets say 9A on the camelot wheel…and i think track B which is 5A would do really well next…ill just do a basic blend when there is 1 min left (thats usually where the outtro begins) and bring in track B…since track A has a basic drum/percussion usually the blend with track B will sound completely fine as there is no harmonics to clash with.

There are also times when 2 songs that totally shouldnt go together based on MIK or keyfinder…that actually go REALLY well.

I don’t worry about harmonic mixing during break-downs in the song or if you hear just percussions. The key doesn’t really matter when you hear just drums.

Beatunes also has a keyfinder along with other features to help you organize your music. http://www.beatunes.com/

It comes with a two week trial so check it out and see if it’s right for you.
