Participantjust an update…..
motu firmware is updated
and traktor accepts the phones output in external mixing mode! works fine
for some reason in external mixing mode with any combo of outputs and inputs (or none used at all)….
the second i put in the phones for any output in external mixing mode traktor crashes….help!!
must be something so simple 🙁January 15, 2017 at 10:15 pm #2489081jayray
Participantsorry correction…..
“traktor accepts the phones output in internal mixing mode! works fine”why would an audio interface (phones) output work in internal mixing mode and not in external mixing mode?
(although all other outputs work fine in both modes)

ModeratorNot sure about the exact routing in Traktor these days anymore. Clearly in internal mixing mode the software ends up having only 1 set of outputs, (depending on the available output channels) up to 4 deck outputs, as it expects you to have an external mixer that will handle that. So the software doesn’t do any routing like master/cue like it would in internal mixing mode.
Mind you, I am a bit rusty on Traktor as I said. Hopefully some of our more experienced Traktor users can help you out here.

Participantinternal mixing mode has 3 stereo outputs and 7 stereo inputs
and external mixing mode has 6 stereo outputs and 5 stereo inputs
….as far as i know (and have tested) all discreet and work independently
i am hopeful someone can help, as the audio interface (including this phone output) seems to work perfectly in all ways with other software and even traktor in internal mixing mode…..it must be something really simple I’m missingFebruary 15, 2017 at 2:42 pm #2533301Colin Brown
ParticipantI have the same interface (Motu Ultralight Hybrid Mk3) and get the same crash when trying to assign the phones outputs in external mode. Running Traktor 2.11.0 23 and Yosemite OS X 10.10.5.
I’m a bit baffled as to why it would do this; perhaps it’s because the phones output is slightly different to the others in that it is assignable in the MOTU Audio Setup utility to monitior other outputs?? Some sort of feedback loop detection as you suggested maybe.

Participantwell thankyou so much for your reply!!
seems strange that only you and i run this interface with traktor, but in all the traktor forum….no reply
the traktor support not much help either, at first they quoted me a known issue…..• TP-7104 – Traktor crashes when assigning ADAT outputs (only in external mixing, int. mixing ADAT works fine)
So at this point, there are some “bigger” studio soundcards that are affected by this issue – we already had
users report the issue with MOTU 828 MK2, Apollo 8 and now with the Ultralite MK3 in your case.and when i reminded them that this interface doesnt have an adat output they replied with….
You are absolutely correct – the Ultralite MK3 doesnt offer any Adat in/outputs – the MK4 version does, but yours
is analog only as we have found out aswell, thanks for the hint !
I have just filed a bug entry for this case in our backlog – here is the entry for your reference:TP-11706 – Traktor 2.11.0 crashes when assigning “Phone Out 1/2” on MOTU Ultralite MK3 (external mixing only)
not sure why other software accepts the output just fine, and the more i work with it, i am thinking it may not be a feedback loop, and the two bug entries may be similar in that the “regular outputs” are different (to traktor) in a similar way to an adat output….such as conversion rate? higher or lower, different for sure and not liked by traktor software in particular
…bummer because i purchased this audio interface specifically to get 12 stereo outputs out of traktor
(4 decks, effects, preview player) at a reasonable price and quality
only other options i seem to find with 12 outputs are way expensive such as rme ufx
…..although things are working great running the phones output with ableton (while using traktor)
…..i still find myself having a hard time trying to go through my collection loading tacks into a track deck instead of the preview player, progamming one push encoder (A and H k1) to: load/play track from list (button) and scroll track (encoder)….like the preview player I’m missing the preview player….no set of midi commands seem to emulate the preview player using a track deck, will have to keep trying i supposethanks for your confirmation I’m not crazy about this output vs software tho 😉

ParticipantIt’s a weird bug for sure. Seems like it must be something Traktor related but who knows whether they will ever fix it.
I wonder if you could add a compact DAC to your setup and use the digital SPDIF output on the Motu as your extra output pair as a workaround.
Or… set up an aggregate audio device using the Motu + internal soundcard and use your laptop’s headphone output for the preview channel.

Participanthmmm, those are both good ideas, often steered away from converters from experience with surround sound setups…but i suppose this is not a quality thing
thought about aggregate device and was thinking this would pillage cpu (considering I’m running traktor and ableton on the same lappy)….but perhaps i should give it a trybut now that we are talking ideas….i wonder if i route the preview player through the spdif and pick it up through ableton internally and preview through that channel (never cueing traktor while playing ableton efx and tracks)
hmmm, thanks for the inspiration on this….was kinda stuck
……workaround is creativity is life

ParticipantI don’t think the aggregate device setup would have an impact on CPU – as far as I know there’s no audio processing going on, it just routes the audio to the different locations. Got to be worth a try, it only takes a few minutes to set up.
Good luck 🙂
