And El Capitan is the one-but-last version of OSX. That is like saying not to upgrade to Windows 8 while 10 is already out.

I am guessing the problem is in the compatibility of USB over Thunderbolt. Somewhere some “translation” needs to be done. As far as I know the MBP still has two USB-ports, so what is stopping you from hooking up your controller using one of those (if needed with a powered USB hub)?

Clearly upgrading from a fully functional situation to a new OS should be done with plenty of reluctance. Waiting a few months til all your DJ-related gear and software reports compatibility with the new OS is good practice. However, El Capitan has been out for so long already (and, as said, succeeded by Sierra), that whatever issues there were in the early days of El Capitan should have been fixed by now.

Actually it is very well possible that some issues with the previous version of the OS in conjuction with certain gear (specifically those hardware-related like Thunderbolt/USB integration) CAN very well be solved in the next version of the OS, thus making it a logical choice to upgrade to the latest version.

You say you use your MBP for other purposes too. This is also something that you should avoid if you can. I own an MBP just for DJ-ing purposes. And when I was using a Windows laptop it was dual-boot with one install only rigged for DJ-ing. That way if I didn’t change anything it would keep working the way I wanted. I have made image copies of the hard disk partition, upgraded, tested the upgraded environment thoroughly and if I found any problems, I could just restore the partition and be back exactly where I was before upgrading. It has saved my skin on one or two occasions.

“And El Capitan is the one-but-last version of OSX. That is like saying not to upgrade to Windows 8 while 10 is already out.”

That’s just it. OS X updates used to be solid, reliable and safe. These days every new version introduces a new set of problem and it takes half a dozen point-releases to fix them. By the time most (but not all) bugs are fixed, Apple releases a new OS X version that introduces yet another set of problems. These days the safest bet is to stay couple OS X releases behind to avoid all the pain.

Apple has an annoying habit fixing some of the bugs for the latest OS X version and bothering to patch the previous version. For example, I own Xone K2s which are suffering from an USB bug in El Capitan. According to Allen & Heath support, that bug is fixed in Sierra. Alas, I can’t upgrade to Sierra because my Denon DN-X1600 does not support Sierra. According to Denon, it’s doubtful that it ever will, because Denon no longer uses the subcontractor who manufactured the DN-X1600.

Argh, I just go back to spinning wax on my SL-1200s 😀

“What is stopping you from hooking up your controller using one of those (if needed with a powered USB hub)?”

Nothing, but I would rather hook all my gear to my MBP with just one Thunderbolt cable. That’s, you know, kinda the point why I bought that rather expensive dock in the first place 😉

“You say you use your MBP for other purposes too. This is also something that you should avoid if you can.”

You’re somewhat stating the obvious here, but realistically speaking how many people can justify that kind of expense? Especially if they are not professional DJs.

I actually do own two MBPs. The other one is used for my day job as a software developer so it allows to keep my personal/DJ MBP mostly clear of unnecessary stuff. The softwares in question were Evernote and 1Password, which are quite essential in my DJ computer as well.

It’s very difficult to justify having 3 MBPs 🙂

LOL … +1 on three MBPs.

I see your problem. And I agree that Apple is no longer totally worry free when it comes to adding gear and upgrading OS.

The price of the TB dock is what has kept me away from it til now. Seems we might not have much choice in the future though 😀
