I don’t have a lot of experience in this dept. but my thoughts would be to play as close to what you would normally. If you over complicate this and screw up, you’re probably done in his eyes. However, if you can perform a clean set with a few comfortable tricks thrown in, it could open the “warm up” doors for you. I personally wouldn’t try to wow people with things that aren’t my usual flavor. 5-10 tracks you know well should do. Be cool, show what you’ve got & GOOD LUCK!

    – Stay true to your sound
    – do not use popular mashups etc.
    – use music that is unexpected but suits your style and the club/venue
    – have at least 2 highlights in your audition, this can be music that is totally unexpected, a cool transition, a scratch routine,…
    – prepare a plan B if the first 2 songs do not work (In an audition 2 songs means prolly 2-4min tops, so have enough songs)
    – do not chew gum or something stupid like that
    – be humble
    – relax
    – do not hesitate
    – do not panic, no matter what happens
    – never stop the music no matter what happens
    – act like a professional

Thanks for the replies quys! It seems like throwing some unexpected tricks in there will be my main aim. I have some of my own mashups I’d use (and according to Soundcloud, they’re not overly popular…). Apart from what could result from the trial, I doubt I’ll be too nervous. It will be in front of my boss who I’m pretty good mates with. I’ll try and put a little creative set together with 10 or so songs and practise it so I’m confident and familiar with it. I might even record it and upload it…

    Thanks again.

Relax and play the music you know, love but also fits the type of club. Normally once I start playing, I forget everything around me and lose the nerves immediately.

I currently work in a club and am using it as my way to get my foot in the door and start spinning some tracks. I’ve recently managed to have a bit of a go on some CDJ’s with one of the local dj’s at a couple of events/when I’m on my break at work and have finally convinced the manager to let me have a go. However, he wants to sit me down with one of the prominent dj’s and see what I can do for 15 mins or so. Now, this isn’t a lot of time to play a huge set, but I was thinking dropping a bunch of mashups and do as much as I can in the time. Can anyone give me a hand with some ideas of what to play and how to go about it? They’ll let me do it on my own gear (laptop and controller) so I won’t be on the cd’s, which I’m still unfamiliar with. Do I try and do a minimix type thing and play like 50 songs in the time?

    Any help would be great!

    Cheers,

    Pete.

It’s only 15min so 10 or so tracks are enough. Make sure they fit your dj style and really try to show that you understand the finer points of djing, show that you can complete smooth mixes with good EQ work. Show that you understand the phrasing of the various genres that you play by bringing the songs in and out at appropriate times. Definitely resist the urge to play a million-n-one songs as on a regular club night that will just confuse the crowd
