Nothing is cut off or resized font or window wise, it just gets kinda cluttered. You can use it in “full screen” mode which resizes the window to 1280*800 which effectively gives you a perfectly sized screen with all the features. I use “mixer” mode which expands the window to reveal all info, but there are other screen configs you can use that show you less so you can have more room for multiple decks. If you suffer from information overload, you may want to pick one of the simpler configs.

Also to answer another question, Macs aren’t really built for customization. There are a few different things you can do, like expand HDD space and upgrade a processor, but apart from that, theres no real upgrades or modifications you can do internally. I would recommend the 500gb HDD or just upgrade to the i7 (which has 500gb). Otherwise you can buy an external HDD for a lot less.

So an SSD swap isn’t possible?

Actually, if you order it from Apple.com, you can get a solid state upgrade. Heres the prices

    128gb – +$200
    256gb – +$600
    516gb – +$1200 (jeez!)

You can also get a memory upgrade from 4gb to 8 for $200. But really aside from those two things, there really isn’t that much customization left.

I’m just playing on the type-o.

I don’t do Macs, but even I would say 15″. I used to use a Thinkpad that had a 1024×768 screen. The size was wonderful for carrying, but for display it became a pain. The software is getting bigger and bigger to the point you need a decent size screen.

Maybe down the road we’ll see nice-sized monitors in booths where DJs can hook up their laptops to it.

Deal breaker then. No way I can afford a 15″ Mac Book.

Sure it is. I just put an SSD into my 13” Macbook Pro. You just should have a good techie friend do it, as the connectors are a bit** you know and disassembly is like when they dismantle those atomic bombs in movies… If you want to do it yourself go to MacFixit.com and look for a picture walkthrough. They also offer all the necessary tools you need in packages.
I also just put a SSD into my iMac, since what apple charges for SSDs is absolutely over the top.. just bought a OCZ at a local dealer and put it in with the macfixit kit.

I think if you can find workarounds with your software and make it work with a 13″ screen, then go for it.

Bear in mind I am a midi DJ. I like to have the mixer view on my screen. If you turn the mixer view off on your software of choice then you don’t need as big a screen. I know many timecode DJs turn off the mixer mode since they’re using their own external mixer.

My suggestion, look up the resolution of the 13″ Macbook, then try to recreate it on the computer you have now. Turn on your DJ software and see if it’s enough space. If it works, then go with the 13″.

This is what it looks like in full screen w/ mixer mode enabled.

Ahhh, virtually the same, just a bit smaller. I can live with that.
Just curious, why does the audio icon have a bar through it?

Doesn’t look too bad. Do you need to see the mixer?

If I were still using a X1600 mixer and a pair of Kontrol X1s, no. But since I’m using a MC6000, then yes.

Oh my Mixtrack Pro was unplugged and that is where I have the sound routed out of.

Personally i have a 13″ and it does the job perfectly, any bigger and portability would become an issue and it handles and shows four decks of serato itch no problem.
But bigger is better… a 15inch screen would be nice, but not necessary.
