ParticipantWelcome Mayahari,
I would start here. This was an article from the site titled “5 Tips For DJing With Just A Laptop”
http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/11/djing-with-just-a-laptop/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+digitaldjtips+%28Digital+DJ+Tips%29There are some alternative, free, softwares listed you may want to download/try also.
Yes, you can beatmatch without a controller as there are virtual pitch faders on the screen you can drag up and down with your mouse although not as easy as using an external device.
Yes, most (if not all) controllers include a mixer section.

MemberThanks Vinnyl for the reply. So to put simple at the moment I push to buy Novation Launchpad as Akai APC 40 is really beyond my wallet. Launchpad helps in beat matching and to some extent substitute the Mixer ?
1. Dell Laptop
2. Traktor Audio 2 ( Audio 6 needs to be compromised )
3. Ableton Live 8
4. Novation Launchpad ControllerIs it a right combination atleast at the moment ?

MemberSorry Vinny I felt that you are too related to vinyl so misspelled your name.

ParticipantActually Mayahari,
I may have jumped the gun on your original post. I’m not too familiar (yet) taking the Ableton Live / Novation Launchpad route to DJing. My comment before regarding software and hardware was in reference to a 2 deck/mixer controller/software style setup. This may or may not apply.

ParticipantMany controlers has built in soundcard why it might not be a good thing to get the Traktor Audio Interface 6
before you know what controller to get….December 22, 2011 at 9:33 am #11780DJ Hane K
ParticipantHey,
if I understood you post correctly, you’re looking to practice DJing which, usually, means playing music from two (or more) decks (i.e. audio sources) and mixing them together on the fly. Ableton is really more for music production – making music, remixes, etc. So, while many DJs nowadays are also producers, if you’re looking to really learn the basic skills of playing music in a live situation in front of an audience, I think you should consider getting a controller better suited for this purpose. For the price of Ableton Live 8 and Traktor Audio 6 (Ableton Live being around 300EUR, and the audio interface a little less but still over 200EUR) you could get a very decent 2 or 4 deck all-in-one controller with physical controls, mixer section, soundcard etc.
Many start with the Numark Mixtrack Pro (~200EUR), but if you’re looking to spend a bit more, for less than the ~500EUR you’d spend on Ableton and TA6 you could get, for instance, the new Numark N4 which to me looks like a very capable 4-deck unit.

MemberHello there! I just wanted to say also look into downloading Audactiy. Its a great tool for editing the mixes that you do. I know you mentioned Ableton which does this also, but I find Audactiy a little more simple and great for just basic editing.

MemberA laptop, a controller (you dont need a super expensive one, infact a used one will still do), audio interface (cheap on), headphones

MemberI didn’t understand the setup you described at the beggining (Audio 6, Ableton and Traktor). But if you’re starting I would definitely reccomend a controller to get the hang of mixing and then buy ableton and all that gear like the Akai APC40 which is one of my favorites btw. If you have a laptop then you’re done, to begin you only need the controller, a laptop and some headphones, possibly a audio interface depending on the controller you buy, most now a days come with the audio interface included. I agree with DJ Hane K about the Numark N4. Ableton is for making music, if that’s what you want, I would reccomend saving more money since you said your money is tight. You don’t wanna start bad believe me. You should make a list of what you want, get a price, and save that amount of money.

MemberThanks a lot guys. I understand things slowly now ( of course it may be late ). But I am attracted to Ableton Live. I dunno y. So at the moment I am buying that as there is offer here in India and also dropped Traktor 6 from the list. Apart from that I decided for Numark N4 and most importantly Ableton is compatible with N4 ? Unable to come to clear conclusion from googling as some guys posted some incurable problems with their experience with the combination. In the meanwhile thanks a lot for the info…

MemberForget Ableton for the moment. Trust me I want a lot of things, including Ableton, but that’s not what I need. There is a big difference. Numark N4 is released in January I think, you’re very confused for when it comes to this… You should ask someone to explain it slowly with details.

MemberSorry Spin just now paid the amount for Ableton and may be it will be shipped in a few days. Sorry for that as something pulled me to Ableton. So I don’t want to dig deep to that. Also as I mentioned due to offer in India especially in South India Ableton got nearly 45% discount. So I went for the offer. Again sorry for that. So my next step is to buy Dell Inspiron 15r. I work as a part time Tennis coach and I am getting this with my hard earned savings. So I may seem a little bit hurry just coz of this offer period as I got Ableton for half a price but of course it will be idle till I get the Laptop. As mentioned earlier I
fancied about Ableton for six months and got a chance. So what to do next? Dell Inspiron 15r with i5 processor with 2.3 Ghz clock speed and 4GB RAM and 750GB HD. Is that a reasonable configuration ? Certainly Mac is unreachable for me at the time. I want to learn the art of DJing. I knew a CD DJ and he said if I show some reasonable improvement he will share his work with me. What should I buy next apart from Ableton Live 8 and Dell Laptop? Yes of course I am confused and sorry for confusing you guys. Again1. Dell Inspiron
2. Ableton Live 8

ParticipantOkay, um… So you say you want to learn the ‘art of DJing’. Others may disagree with me, but I would definitely say that Ableton Live is NOT the best way to start learning – as I said before, it’s really geared more towards music production and as such, has tons and tons of features that will confuse you and get in the way of actually learning how to mix tunes together.
Here’s what I’d suggest:
Step 1. watch this video:

Step 2. watch all the other videos by ellaskins – for easy access go to http://www.djtutor.com/tutor/ellaskins/
Step 3. get something to practice on – be it your dad’s old turntables, a couple of 2nd hand CDJs and a mixer, or a digital controller such as the Numark N4 (which, at least here in Europe, is already out and shipping)
Step 4. Practice.
Step 5. Repeat step 4.Then, after you’ve got the hang of maintaining a decent mix, and maybe with a few gigs under your belt, dig out the Ableton Live box you’ve ordered and start playing around with that – this way, the tons of features offered by ableton may not seem as confusing and intimidating anymore.
I hate to be harsh here, but I really, truly and honestly believe that Ableton will mostly likely only get in the way of you learning how to DJ, seeing how confused you seem to be about the whole thing. I mean no disrespect, just the opposite, I think it’s great that you want to learn to DJ, but trust me – learn to walk before you try to learn how to breakdance!

ParticipantMy humble suggestion:
As you already has decided to go for Ableton and Dell
(Is there no second hand market for Mac in your country?);-)I think that Ableton is a good program because you can use it to DJ with but also it is good for making mashups, remixes, mixtapes and music production if you decide to do any of them later on! It can be that for abeginner it can take some time to learn, but if you later decide to swap to for example Traktor you can still have good use of Ableton IMO.
The thing is you now have a computer and a software.
The next thing to BUY! is music, if yoou have CDs you can rip them and then go online and buy music.
And buy a pair of headphones if you do not have that. And for heavens sake get an external harddrive for back up
and back up all your music all the time! That goes for PC and Mac always do backup!!!After that you can start learning your program by reading the Ableton manual from side to side and
check the toturials that is on Abletons site. You can use the keyboard to start with to DJ.After that you need something to play from and to start with if you are on a low budget would be the
Numark Mixtrak Pro DJ controller for example. It has built in soundcard and headphone out and I think a LE software of Traktor so you can try that SW if you want. Then you are good to go, but do not rush it, it will take some time…..
Good luck!

MemberHi Guys thanks again for enlightening the situation. Just now got my Ableton Live 8 from shipping. But as Hane suggested I don’t want to uncover Ableton package at the moment. It’s like romancing a girl from distance. But its nice to be like that now. Only if I get the reasonable understanding about the basics its worth opening it. The next thing I want to buy is obviously a controller and a Laptop which I decided as Dell Inspiron 15r. But in the meantime before buying the Laptop just I want to know certain things. At the moment I got Ableton Live 8. Its better to go for Numark Mixtrack Pro or N4 ? I presume there won’t be any compatible issues with Numark Mixtrack Pro or N4 with Ableton ? Do you have any special suggestion or experience with that combination ? Also at the moment my brother got a Compaq Laptop but with Intel Pentium Dual Processor with 1.86GHZ Clock speed and 2GB RAM and 250GB HD. The specification cannot be enhanced as all are built in. This specification is enough for learning purpose if I get any one of the two Numark controller or any other controller ? Obviously I won’t install Ableton in this Laptop and go with the free software bundled with the controller. Which is preferable N4 or Mixtrack Pro or anything you have in your list ? Still can I start with this Compaq Laptop or to buy Dell at the moment.
Yeah I am still confused .. -
