MemberI dunno… All I run is Traktor 2 LE on my second-hand Late 2009 BookMac, and it manages just fine, both loading tracks, analyzing and running the program can be done without problems. I did upgrade the RAM to 4GB though.
But I have no experience with DAWs, so I can’t help you there I’m afraid.

MemberI run Ableton 8 on my macbook and is not a pro, to be honest I just can’t justify paying out a £1,000 for the model up although when i did the switch to mac from pc i was really impressed with work flow and speeds. But i still have a quad core pc as well for production but still at times doesn’t run as good as my 2 core duo macbook. OSX is the far better operating system by far no messing around no pop ups just up and ready to go.

ParticipantI have the 2.2ghz pro, it was similar in spec to macbook, in Ableton it depends how many tracks you got going and how many plugins are applied to each track. A more even comparison is Traktor with four decks loaded and effects on each deck – with my macbook pro it hardly dents the CPU performance, but then I do have memory maxed to 8gb, which I highly recommend.
Do also consider however, that people where creating great tracks with just an Atari ST back in the days and the spec of the machine I got now would have been top of the line for a desktop five years ago. Obviously more CPU power you have the better, producers could always add or do more to rinse it out but sooner or later they all reach a limit. On the macbook you might reach sooner that’s all and when you do you do the same what all the big boys do – bounce a track to audio.

ParticipantYour a little to late to the party as the 999$ white MacBooks have been discontinued as of this morning. I think some stores may have stock but if you really want one I’d act quick.

MemberActually, the educational store still has some. I hope I will be able to get one before they run out :/ Another possibility I was thinking is an iMac at home for major producing and mixing and getting an inexpensive laptop for mixing purposes only.

MemberI was going to buy a iMac last year but im going to just upgrade to a mac book pro quad core, im always moving about with my mac book so it makes more sense. I was anti Mac until about 3 years ago i bought my first mac book off a friend of mine and couldn’t believe how quick and reliable it was quick start ups, low cpu in Ableton I wondered why i had never one before.
Ive still got a quad core PC as well for music production but doesn’t seem to run as quick as this 2 core duo I hate Windows as a operating system as well its awful OSX beats it hands down. My only problem with Apple is the price of the Mac Books its really expensive, they work brilliantly but surly they could bring them prices down a bit!July 21, 2011 at 9:23 pm #4331Carlos
Participantwell…This debate is over. The macbook is no more…
I am going to replace my macbook pro with a newer pro. I have an iMac and love it. Yes, POWERFUL bit of machinery but is core 2 duo. I’m so interested in the i5 and i7 machines in the macbook pro line….

ParticipantI suggest getting a Mac Book Pro Laptop for djing while your out only for one simple reason: Stability. Say what you will in the Mac Vs. PC war and what not but the simple fact is that IBM let their patent run out on making the “PC” years ago in a shortsighted move that cost them billions if not more.
Apple still has there patents and is the only manufacturer of Apple products. Therefore software designers know what kind of hardware configuration their dealing with. Granted you could have a possible few hundred different combinations of hardware components on any given Mac be it laptop or desktop but that is no where near the amount of hardware combinations you will find in a PC. Your talking about developing software for hardware that literally anyone can make and to any specification (within reason) they want. The bug squashing logistics of that are insane.
I’m a PC person at heart. I built my first computer when I was 10 and have a killer custom built desktop to this day but I still will always DJ with a Mac. I’m not saying Mac’s don’t crash because they do. I’m saying that If I develop software for both platforms I can make a product that will work across all hardware with the smallest of problems possible if I have a finite list of possibilities.
The problem with PC’s is there are too many unknowns when coding software. You just build it for the most common current setups and play whack-a-mole with the rest as problems arise.

I’m just going to be a bit of a pedant here – it was actually Compaq hacking the BIOS, rather than IBM allowing a patent to expire, that lead to the PC-clone wars.
The IBM PC was always intended to be built out of “off the shelf” components. It was built this way to get it to market quickly. Yes, that is a large part of the difficulties the Windows world has (that the Apple world doesn’t) – and many people prefer the Windows world precisely for this reason.

Ha ha nice one your spot on with this, I was amazed how quick and reliable the mac book was after having years of crashing messing about with Windows I’m probably gona go totally mac when I have the cash Windows is far to time consuming.
