    That made me laugh.

    Hey Kevin,

Had a listen (and followed you) and I’m not going to lie, it’s not my kind of music, however in general it is sounding good, Logic isn’t an easy program to get the hang of (in my experience anyway, I’m an Ableton kind of guy) and to manage that in a couple of weeks shows that you have some skills.

My only (constructive) criticism at this point is the breakdowns and buildups, It’s all about tension and release and (for me) the buildup is lacking a certain something. Being the Ableton user that I am I could offer you some advice on how to do this but it would be pointless so maybe have a look at http://www.logicprohelp.com/.

Anyway, hope this helps, it is just my opinion but hope to hear more from you.

Thanks for your reply. I agree that the build/breaks are lacking some energy. I also feel like the melody is off a touch. Well, I may mess around with a couple things but am already itching to start another one. This shits addictive!

In here it takes time for people to listen and reply… be patient 🙂

Now to the track you made:
Basic layout of the track is ok and the sound floor is good. You used logic so the whole spectrum of presence is there which is good.
Now you have a lot of sounds in your track and for my taste you overdo it a little bit in making it “sound fun” so after a while it bothers me. Try to think of “less is more” in the future and not cramp anything in there.
The basic layout of the song is OK, but there are some more rules to follow, so the breaks and counts do shake me up sometime. Now those rules are not set in stone, but I think when you begin you should follow them, as breaking these rules makes more sense if you know those 🙂
So I would strongly suggest you take some time to read one or two books on song structuring (even though it is for pop the book “How to write a pop song” has many good points for all genres) and for your sound structure maybe a basic book for music theory.

Overall as a first track this is really good so I encourage you to go on.

    Terry,

Thank you for taking time to listen and comment. I was hoping you would, and I accept it as very complimentary. I have read a short text on music theory and used some of it. There are perfect fifths littered throughout. I set out to make the song in the key of Am (8A for Camelot DJs ;-), and per MIK, I accomplished that.

I know the lead synth is a little annoying. That is almost the sound I was going for, but without pushing most people over the edge.

I hear you on the structure. All 8 bar phrases and make changes at each, but I wound up introducing the lead line after 32 bars, then dropped it after 16 to bring it back in another 16, then droppping again for the first breakdown. Probably could’ve cut out that whole back and forth and made the first pre-breakdown section 32 bars as I did the post breakdown, giving it more symmetry.

I’ll check out the book as I do enjoy books. Still, I sat down and did this per Mike Monday’s “are ya readin bout makin music, or are ya makin music?” I must say, making this was the best learning experience thus far. I’m seeing how learning one or two new things a day, whether its music theory, synthesis, or Logic function based, adds up over a LONG time.

Don’t worry it was critique on a higher level, one can clearly hear that the basics are nailed there.
The basic construction is good, but what bothered me was that the whole song was a little too much with the lead and some other transitions. I did not count the bars (well I prolly did, but I did not think about it… old DJ habit) but sometimes it felt “off” or “too early”.

Still bear in mind this is really good stuff and a song I would be willing to listen too even if it was not posted here.
