MemberWhoever Sean Kingstons DJ was at a free “end of the year” party I went to. First of all I wasn’t there for kingston… But anyway, his DJ would play a song just long enough for you to be like “alright this songs ok” then he’d cut it. Seriously every time. And he kept hitting the air horn sample all night long. The only songs he didn’t cut were kingstons songs because all he had to do was push play and stand there. But occasionally he’d start playing some other song like the black eyed peas for example. He’d play it just long enough to get some people dancing, then cut it and they’d start talking again, rinse repeat. Also, he would constantly cut out the music to have people sing along. Which is fine every now and then with songs that everyone knows. But he did it on every song.
Needless to say he made the local guy who came on after him to finish off the night look like a god.

MemberWhen I’ve seen bad DJing it has usually been in cheesey Top 40 style clubs. By chance one of the DJs will play a tune I like, but only plays it for like 1 minute and then whips it off just before the good bit starts. THEN he follow up with RnB – I literally want cleave open their heads with a spoon when that happens.

MemberTheres a place local to me that plays the same old rinsed top40. the guys got a mix CD with the cheesiest tunes on mashed into each other. He plays it every single time, it breaks my heart. The only reason I still go there is for the totty and cheap booze. But when that place gets a good DJ, from time to time, the place is electric!
Another recent group of DJ’s I went to see were doing a comeback party. Belfry vs pink coconut. Some bigger oldschool names there, but it was DIRE. The ‘DJ’ was playing old raggae, not the dancable stuff, things like ‘pass the dutty to the left hand side’ all night long through peak. He’d play the intro and first verse and do a massive spinback when it hit the chorus and people looked like they might try and enjoy themselves. Then onto the next intro.
The place looked like a funeral. Someone must have shot the DJ and replaced him because they stuck some jungle on about an hour before close and the whole place started bouncing.
To this day I cannot fathom what that DJ was thinking with the spinbacks. If youre an established DJ, when you lookup and see the crowd not enjoying themselves, seriously, get with the program.July 1, 2011 at 8:43 am #1000747July 1, 2011 at 10:27 am #2229Rob Francis
MemberI was at university for 4 years and I swear the local nightclub (run by the union) played the exact same set every Saturday night. The music never changed!

MemberI went to a teenage dance night a while ago. The DJ was just… ugh. Like, he played good tunes for the crowd, but only by fluke. He was playing top 40, and teenagers in my city seem to consist of 80% top 40 fans, 19% metalheads and 1% me and my friends (plus/minus 1% >.<). He was playing tunes at all the wrong times. I've never really had a crowd to try to work with, but even I was thinking "Oh no no not that track you're gonna kill the dance floor, nooo, please be some dance remix, no, no it isn't, no, you lost them…". He couldn't beatmix at all, just fading outro to intro. When he wasn't doing that, he was screwing with the flangers and filters, which was TERRIBLE because the system was very treble-heavy and it was literally painful.

Too true, ive seen a few DJ’s round my area flangering at every possible moment, literally every transition for the hour I was in there was excentuated by way too much flanger. Its like a kid with a new toy!

Yes; Without A Doubt; Flangers and Filters between Every Transition shows a ‘Lack Of Skill’ or ‘Confidence’ in Mixing; as the Effects are used to ‘Cover Up’ the Inabilty to Mix Seamlesslessly; which can be Completely Okay at Home; but in front of a Live Audience; I Feel that even the Most Inexperienced of ‘Customers’ would realise what was going on;
In my Area Customers can be Very Judgemental (which makes us Better at what we do); and will even ‘Boo’ if they get Bored or realise they have a ‘JukeBox with Fingers’ :oops:;
However; we all have to Start Somewhere; and some Polite Encouragement can Help Us All :);July 1, 2011 at 4:28 pm #2285U31
MemberOnce or twice a set for me, love the sound of flanger/ filters but more then twice is too much imho

MemberI remember seeing DJ Dan Desnoyers like 2-3 years ago. He’s pretty much the biggest Hot Shot from around here and everyone loves him because nobody knows he’s terrible, they just like the fact that he’s a “world-famous” DJ from Quebec.
So I go into this room where he’s playing, stayed there for about 45 minutes and during that time, I shit you not he played Rihanna’s “SOS (Rescue Me)” 3 times during those 45 minutes. ‘Nuff said.

Understood, and its a great moral standing point, which I hold myself. But just to be clear, im not bitching about him because he was inexperienced. Exactly the opposite in fact, he is the resident and has been for a long time. Its just plain sloppy and lazy.

ParticipantRecently, I saw this one guy who was really out of tune with the crowd. He kept playing house music to a crowd that really wasn’t into that vibe, late nineties to early two thousand house. This was mostly an over thirty crowd that was into Top 40 music. And he definitely train wrecked music. After folks being hyped on one song, he concluded with one that killed the vibe.
