It depends on how it’s used. In DnB and Dubstep it can be quite accepted/acceptable to rewind a track you mixed in and start it again at the beginning of the track. This is often used to please the audience and have the benefit of hearing the full build-up of the track.

However, I truly dislike this practice and would certainly discourage it. I’ve already heard which track you are going to drop, don’t make me wait for it while the intro is playing again. The only time it might be acceptable is when you are playing a track you produced yourself and you want people to hear it completely.

Using it as a transition ‘effect’ is possible but needs good timing. It could work if the end of your spinback coincides exactly with the drop of the next song. I don’t think it would work for most house tracks as you really need a distinct drop for it to work.

It used to be used as a crutch to get out of a bad mix back in the vinyl days. I don’t really see much of a purpose now unless you really learn how to use it really well. I don’t listen to djs who use it and I rarely hear it in the styles of music I listen to these days. I’ll do it sometimes when messing around with house or techno in my bedroom but that’s rare.

Yeah I think it is a lifeline if you screw up and still want to get out quickly…

It can be used effectively as an effect, but sparingly IMHO.

i use it in hiphop/rap mostly. i hate when i hear djs use it as their only transition method. O btw, just a little tip, I like to add an echo effect so when i back spin, just before i cut the crossfader over, ill stop the platter and ill get a nice echo out effect of that track. try it out! I totally did this by accident in one of my mixes i was recording and i was like dam that sounded good. lol

I’v just come out of my ‘Hey, doing a backspin sounds good to get out of any bad mix’ phase.

Unfortunately wandered straight into the ‘just filter everything’.

Currently doing a smooth transition to the ‘Echo sounds cool all the time’.

But seriously, it sounds ok, but is usually my get out of jail free card / lets change the tempo (a lot)

I’ve been to a few drum and bass and dubstep concerts, the last one was UKF Rampage in Antwerp last September where I heard many DJ do it. The “backspin” is the one thing I hate about the genre. Granted, it’s a fun technique to use, but to me it completely takes out the energy of a mix. I only do it when I want to mix two songs and I want to use the standard bpm of a song to avoid crazy high pitched vocals.
