KeymasterI would not get my hopes up too high. Serato will NOT introduce DVS for all controllers easily. The controller has to have some specific features for it to work (for example audio-in routing to software), which many do not have (I think not even the SX can do it at this time).
I also doubt it will be a freebie feature.August 6, 2014 at 9:32 pm #2048045Isaiah Furrow
Participantyeah, I’m just stoked at the thought, that with the DDJ-SZ, and now Denon MC6000 Mk2, and the little Akai modular controller… maybe there will be more DVS compatible releases in the future. I’d love to try out DVS, but can’t justify a Rane or DJM-900 SRT…. I’d consider the SZ once this Terminal Mix 8 has paid for it’s self, but by then I’m hoping for more options, possibly more affordable ones too!
Back to the topic at hand… one thing I forgot to mention, I am unable to get Slip Mode activated from the hardware at this time, it works via mouse inside Serato DJ but not via hardware input. It seems that Reloop and Serato are aware of this and working on fixing it in either the next Serato update or a firmware update for the TM8… I have yet to update the hardware or even check which firmware it shipped with. For now I’m just taking it all in, when kiddos let me have a chance to practice that is….. Other than that, I am really in love with the new bit of kit, I’d buy another one at this point. I’m not sure there would have been a better option for me, short of something much more spendy. Even the MC6000 Mk2, once you figure in the full Serato upgrade, and $100 for DVS, it’s getting up there. I picked mine up at a steal of a deal, but had to buy a truckload of stuff all at once to get that bargain. I think I’d be happy with it though, even at list price! Good luck to the OP, let us know what you end up doing and how the switch works out for you. Keep shining folks!August 6, 2014 at 11:13 pm #2048057DJ Vintage
ModeratorI knew about Santa Creek, but thought it a nice play on words 🙂

I also use cheap karaoke mic from Shure. As long as you know how to handle the mic eq and gain and channel volume fader and ofcourse your own instrument aka your voice it’s ok.
I really don’t care about dvs functionality, but it would be nice to have some kind of jog led indicator. No, SX would not get dvs functionality. They claim it’s a technical inability, but as we all know about pioneer’s policy the real reason behind this is probably to not cannibalize the SZ sale.
Yes, regarding that slip mode mapping issue. Reloop shoud’ve been issuing new firmware update a few days ago. So I’ll wait a bit before I order just to make sure everything is working when I get a new device. Too bad you can’t modify a natively supported controller’s mapping.

KeymasterIt is indeed a technical inability with the SX. I talked to Pioneer about this in great length and the mixer (which can be used standalone) has no connected soundcard to stream the mixer information back to the software. For DVS to work this is a must.
So technically the TM8 could actually do this, but it has only 1 AUX in, but this AUX is routable through the software by flipping the small switch beside the volume control of the AUX in.
This feature is really missing in the SX.August 8, 2014 at 12:33 am #2048151jernej.repnik@gmail.com
ParticipantI was quick to judge. But I’ve had some bad experience with Pioneer in the past.
One more question. What would you say about overall sound quality comparing SX and TM8 and mic input on SX?
Because I wasn’t impressed with SX hooked up in a club. And I know some djs who rather use club’s mixer mic input instead of SX’s.August 8, 2014 at 1:40 pm #2048218Terry_42
KeymasterWell hate to burst a bubble, but the internal mixing components of the SX is pretty much the same hardware as in most Pioneer club mixers.
The TM8 is another thing as it is basically a simple throughput with volume control which is pretty decent. So I never had issues with it.However I never thought the Pioneer Mic inputs to be bad, what most likely causes bad sound in clubs however is that in smaller clubs they have no real sound tech. They will not “zeroline” the whole signal patch, so somewhere in the path will be some distorting (not necessary distortion sounds) of the signal by non linear amplification, which will lead to bad sound. Most of the time this is blamed towards the newly added component, which is in most cases the controller.
A real tech would redo the zeroline if another part of equipment is inserted, which in the hands of a pro tech takes roughtly 2 minutes and the sound will be perfect. So my personal gripes with the SX are more my personal workflow which does not fit the layout of the SX and hence I prefer the TM8. I always found the sound quality of both units to be excellent.

ParticipantOk I get “zeroline” concept but on the other hand in my opinion the sound coming out from sx is not as good as the one from djm 850. And I’m talking about same cicumstances. So I doubt about same internals if they don’t produce equal quality sound. Yes djm is pricier, but sx is also far from cheap.
I’m not sure about the mic input, because it’s not my experience (i was told about it by other djs). But Pioneer is upgrading mic input in sx2.Can you explain why is tm8 better for your workflow than sx? I’m very interested to read about it. I’ve considered my tendency to scratch and desire for big pads but I don’t want to miss something.
Oh, I almost forgot, can somebody confirm slip mode issue being fixed in 1.7 beta?

KeymasterWell the main things for me in the TM8 are:
– Best jogs for scratching, they are lightyears better jogwheels for me than the SX
– Combine pad modes (use slicer with hotcues etc.)
– All metal construction
– Extremely good crossfader for a non innofader
– More compact design
– Mirroed layout (even back in the day when I used CDJs I had a tendency to nudge the left side pitchfader when grabbing the left most channel EQs… so mirrored pitchfaders are awesome for me)
– It has everything I need in the formfactor that I still find OK to carry in a controller backpackNow all of the above are highly subjective stuff.
Now from my workflow side, I just like how the buttons are arranged and how to work the transport section and pad section. I actually prefer the pads being on top of the jogs as it makes scratching more easy for me and drumming on the pads is still no problem.August 12, 2014 at 11:36 am #2048435jernej.repnik@gmail.com
ParticipantYes, yes and yes. 🙂
I also like all the things you’ve mentioned.
Maybe I’m not so bothered with mirrored/cdj layout, but having a pitch fader on the outer side away from other controls is probably better.
One last question and then I’ll stop bothering you.
Which controller backpack do you use? Because tm8’s formfactor seems to be somewhere in between. Bigger than s4 and narrower than sx. So bags and backpacks for the first are too small and in bags meant to the second one there is some space left…August 13, 2014 at 9:18 am #2048492Terry_42
KeymasterI use a Magma Pack that I bought a little large for my TM4 (I think it is the XL) but they come with dividers and buffer thingies that you can velcro on so you can adjust the size to make it work.
Just check their website (as mine I think is no longer made) I am sure you will find one, they have excellent gear.August 13, 2014 at 2:10 pm #2048522jernej.repnik@gmail.com
ParticipantOk,Reloop official side states: Dimensions: 525 x 63 x 362 mm
So thats 525 x 362.But magma riot pack xl seems to have smaller inside space:
Dimensions: External (H/W/D): 56 x 37 x 23 Internal: 51 x 32 x 8 (controller compartment)
That’s 36,2 cm (tm8) vs 32 cm (riot pack) http://www.magma-bags.de/produkte/riot-backpack-xl/riot-dj-backpack-xl-2-e.php3Even the xxl version seems to be too small: Internal: 68 x 33 x 8 cm
http://www.magma-bags.de/produkte/riot-dj-backpack-xxl/riot-dj-backpack-xxl-2-e.php3And their bag & gear guide for tm8 offers only a case and a huge backpack which I don’t really like.
http://www.magma-bags.de/gear-guide/Terminal-Mix-8-e.htmlSo how do you get your controller in there?
I’ve also came across this udg bag. Udg states it should fit tm8.
http://www.udggear.com/by-device/reloop/terminal-mix-8/udg-urbanite-midi-controller-flightbag-large-blackAnd price wise I like this model but fitting is again questionable:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/magma_digi_control_bag_xxl.htmIt’s difficult to decide because we don’t have any dj stores here where I could’ve test both the controller and a bag for it. :S
August 13, 2014 at 3:33 pm #2048542Terry_42
KeymasterYes that is mine, the one with the rolltop.
I stuff a lot of other gear in there so I like that it is quite huge and has velcro dividers to stuff things in.That UDG bag looks really cool I have to say. Very good protection I guess, but have not seen that in person. However other UDG bags I saw usually were really good quality.
