I have been looking at the KRK sub woofer – it is about £330, but I only want it to go with my KRK monitors.  I heard it can fill a big room…… I don;t really need it for my studio, but just love getting them gadgets!!

I don;t know if it is compatible with your gear.  What is your price range?

    KRK is not road-ready imho.

If you like your Mackie’s, you might want to check out the HD-series. I ended up getting the 18″ HD1801 version (it sounded more tight than the 15″ surprisingly) and one is more than plenty if you only have a 2-speaker setup. You can then upgrade to the HD-series tops when you make some more money.

I have the 1221’s, but they have some others that are equally great, just serve different purposes.

I can truly recommend them. The sound is better than anything else I tested (direct A/B comparison in showroom), build quality is good. They are (relatively) light. Lot’s of digital amp power. Very good DSP.

Whatever you do, make sure you get something that has wheels or can have wheels added. Or fabricate a wheel board. You do NOT want to carry a sub around more than you have to. Respect your back!

Mackie HD is indeed a good recommendation.

Thanks for the advice. I visited Store DJ here in Australia the other day and had a good blast with many different subs and one thing I am certain about is the Mackie HD1801 is way too big / heavy for me coming in at 48kg. Shame because it was on sale!

I liked the HD1501 but obviously it was nowhere near as powerful. The QSC KW181 was roughly the same size / weight as the larger Mackie but almost twice the price.

I guess I have to chose between hoping to find a discounted QSC or failing that, having less volume with the HD1501 which I might hire once to see if it will suit my purposes or not…

Yeah I would hire it once, so you see how it performs in the real world.

That’s why you need to get the caster wheels! Holes are already there, just bolt them in.

And with subs, more often than not. Weight says a lot about them. These are actually (relatively) light for 18″ subs.

Usually 15″ have less power, but a tighter bass. 18″ tend to “wobble” more at volume. In case of the Mackies the 15″ started to suffer a bit at the ultimate end of it’s power, where the 18″ pumped out excellent tight bass.

It’s way I decided to have one 18″ instead of the original plan of buying 2 times 15″. Never looked back.
