I’m one of those who keeps my music collection in WAV format, so gone way past the point where laptop storage is sufficient. I now have a 1tb external lacie drive, works very well.

i tried the external hd route, while i think its a great idea to “back up” your music every so often. i just dont think its convenient enough while using your laptop everywhere you go. having everything based on one internal hard drive makes life alot easier to be honest.

but idk, interested to hear other reasons as to why to go external.

Caru, What OS do you use and what media player Itunes or other and do you have problems with losing media information? Also do you use Bea Tunes or Media Monkey or similar program? I keep my media on an external and I’m having issues with some that are on the internal drive. Thanks

Ha! Someone told me the same thing when I went digital, and I can’t remember why either. As I was using a multi-use laptop at that time, I followed along to keep music clutter out of my work clutter. Since upgrading to a dedicated show computer though, all my music is on the internal drive, and my eternal drive is now just a backup/archive.

I prefer to have the music in Traktor on my laptop itself. I’m using one external HD for a complete back-up of my laptop via Time machine (Mac) and an external HD just for the complete music collection. I really recommend to get at least one external HD for back-ups!

I have everything on my laptop hd, I have a copy of the laptop harddrive with os and music and programs ready to slot in, and I have my music on 2 external drives purchased 6 months apart so they don’t fail at the same time, which I have heard story’s about. I have spent countless hours searching for music and many thousands of dollars buying it, plus i ripped all my vinyl to mp3 before offloading most of it, those tunes have memories.

As for playing it I just use the internal hd

I’m using Windows 7 and iTunes. Whenever I download new tracks I always have to key in the info manually which is a bit annoying. Not used beatunes or mediamonkey. If I move the music as wav files between libraries then I’ll lose the info, so have kept them to one library.

On another note, my external hdd is backed up and kept at another location.

All on the one laptop for me, digital is about convenience as much as anything else in my (Mac)Book!

External HD for me. My internal HD is just too small for my music collection.

I keep most of my tunes on an external drive. I also have a big folder of music on my laptop, but it’s synced with Dropbox. I’m paranoid that my computer might crash and me lose all my music…. so that’s why I keep it on an external.

All of my music is on my Macbook; which is then automatically backed up (hourly!) via my wirless netowrk to an external drive using Apple’s Time Machine software!

Thanks everyone …seems to be a split opinion, though universal agreement that backing up your music is critical regardless where you store it.

While external HDs are nice (I have several) nothing beats cloud backup.

most of my music on macbook I use my iMac for downloading from pools and sort the best versions of mixes then transfer them to my laptop and once a month or every 2 weeks I make a back up of the music liberary on laptop nit on iMac because If they get lost I will have the songs I would play backed up and not 1000’s of remixes I won’t play.
