Well at home my DJ Desk is “selfmade” from IKEA parts that I modified to fit my solution and so the monitors etc. find enough space, are in the correct height etc.
For mobile DJing I use separate stands. For the controller + laptop I use a flightcase that is on top of a keyboard stand, monitors on monitor stands and lights + PA on speaker stands with connecting light truss. Around the DJ equipment goes a booth with LED curtain that is selfmade from pipes (see several youtube videos how to do that) and generic LED curtain from hongkong for “very cheap you know”.
This holds the cost down, is very portable and easy to assemble in under 30min by a single person (faster if I have help). However nowadays I mostly work together with a rental service, they put in a DJ booth, lights and sound… so I just show up with my flightcase, connect and play. Most mobile gigs (weddings and company events) they are OK with the extra money if it looks good and the sound is cool.

Like Terry, I Frankenstein’ed a few different things from Ikea to build my studio. The best bits I have are two old CRT monitor swivel stands – the kind that clamp onto the back of a desk and reach out over it. I used to use them to ‘hover’ my CD decks over my turntables (or push them out of the way if I was bringing in a record). Since going digital I use them to hold the laptops with the controllers underneath.

If you have an Ikea near by, hit up the “As Is” section and start from there. You’ll find something that will work for you.

IKEA stuff always manages to work out well. If you got money to burn, there’s a company called Sefour that make some really nice DJ and production specific stands and furniture. I know there’s a bunch of UK stores that stock it.

Last week I found this post on DJ Tech Tools about an IKEA DJ Boot (http://www.djtechtools.com/2011/10/16/how-to-create-a-professional-dj-booth-from-ikea-parts/). Bought the parts and started to put it together to discover I need additional 3 inch bolts from Home Depot. Well it’s together and I like it…

Awesome set up. I think this is probably the route that I will end up going as well. Very clean looking and quite functional as well.

If you do…you will need to make a trip to Home Depot. My next step… new monitors.
