All true, what is said above. The 4-channel SpeakOn is not specifically for tri-amping, but can be used for a 4-way system.
For example:
1) Sub
2) Low
3) Mid
4) High
What is important to notice, is that on a 2-channel speakon it’s not SAY +/- 1 for LOW and +/1 2 for HIGH. It IS !!!
Connections for a 2-channel SpeakOn (thanks to Neutrik):
Pin Single Dual
1+ + Single + LOW
1- – Single – LOW
2+ not connected + MID/HIGH
2- not connected – MID/HIGH
A 2-channel connector will fit all connections, a 4-channel plug only fits a 4-channel connection.
It’s an industry-standard to hook it up this way. For two reasons. One is that cables need to be interuseable. Can’t
be on a festival and have one equipment guy use LOW on 1s and the other have LOW on 2s. They couldn’t mess up their cables. The second is that from 1 to 4 the amp power goes down. That way, the highest amp (lower frequency = bigger amp) always goes to the biggest speaker. That way the chance of blowing speakers up is eliminated (well at least because of hooking up your 4K low end amp to the high end speakers).
So, stick to this convenvention 1-to-4 = low-2-high and you’ll be fine.
