    Mind telling your budget first?

Anyways Rokit, JBL and Pioneer active speakers are often used and recommended for bedroom DJing :3 Just don’t get flat monitors (such as Yamaha HS series) that are rather used for studio purposes

I’ve actually got my eye on the Rokits but I figured if this alto can get the job done, why pay extra?

But I know sooner or later I will have to purchase thoseโ€ฆ I just wasn’t sure if using a regular 12 inch powered speaker would alter my mixing quality ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

My advice would be to go to a local dj store and listen to the speakers.

I dont think your mixing skills can be improved by speakers, your listening pleasure on the other hand can.

Personally i own a pair of KRK 6’s but i find them a little bass heavy for a small room.
I should have purchased smaller ones, thats why i recommend going to the store and listen to them first.

Most online shops offer refunds and the possibility to return goods.
You could use that option to try out different types ๐Ÿ˜‰ ( just be carefull with the packaging )

My knowledge on PA speakers isn’t really good but for example Rokits (btw those are sure shots that you can’t go wrong with!) are often used as studio speakers and that means they are or should be accurate. And in my knowledge PA speakers aren’t as accurate as studio speakers are (someone correct me if I’m wrong!). But in theory I believe yes they can improve your mixing quality as you SHOULD have more accurate sound.

I think someone like DJ Vintage can give you more professional answer here as he is sound engineer :p

I have Rokit 6’s and been very impressed with them. They look good too.
I wanted more bottom end bass so got the Rokit 10s sub to go with it and that really puts out some bottom bass ๐Ÿ™‚

Awesome thanks for the tips guys! Sounds like the Rokits are a must have….maybe have to go with the 4’s living in a small apartment haha.

Actually the 4s are not quieter than the 6s, they just have less base and are meant to be used with a subwoofer.
With the 6s or higher you can get away without a subwoofer, as their base is quite good. So unless you want to knock the socks of your neighbours you wont need a sub hehe

Frankly, if you just want to practice mixing, I’d get a set of small (10″ or so) PA speakers. This is what you will hear when you play out also and you can take these to small house parties and such, something not possible with monitors.

Monitors and their sound qualities become important if you start producing your own tracks and you need as close to “true” sound as you can get for mixing and mastering. For “regular” DJ-ing the slightly colored sound of PA systems can actually be easier to listen to for longer periods of time and usually they will pack more of a punch.

A 12″ in a small space will most likely “boom”. They are made to provide sufficient bass sound to a slightly larger room. In a small room the bass will reflect of the walls and intensify causing the boomy effect.
