Speakers for playing out at gigs or speakers (monitors) for practicing at your home?
    What is your budget?

For practicing at home. I haven’t reached the level to play gigs yet. My budget is $400 to $600. Honeslty I don’t want anything too fancy. I just want some speakers with good quality. Would you also suggest that I get active speakers or passive speakers. I am leaning towards active speakers.

Most definitely active. The hassle of having a seperate amp is not really worth it imho.

At the price range you mention, the KRK’s are great. I’d be leaning towards the 6″ version providing you don’t have a huge bedroom (in which case the 8″ might be a good choice). They are a great compromise between size (not TOO much in your face), and bass reproduction (don’t expect house shaking bass, you can always a single KRK sub when you think the bass is too little for your taste). The 8’s (I think) are pretty big already and the 5’s (which I have) sound great, but are a tad lacking in the heavy bass area.

There are a few articles on other brands/models that are certainly suitable too over on the blog and here on the forums. So (ab)use the search box on both and there is plenty to read on this topic.

An alternative, if you DO plan on playing smaller (house) parties in the near future is to just get two active 10″ PA speakers on stands. Yet another alternative (but budgetwise somewhat higher than you mentioned) is something like the LD Systems Dave G-Series (G10, G12 and G15 I think).

DJ Vintage, which series of KRK speakers do the ones you mention fall under? ROKIT, VXT8 or Exposè and which generation?

ROKIT is the entry models and actually very good.
However I would go towards the 6s, as the 5s have little to less low end so you might need a subwoofer. The 6s work good without a subwoofer unless you only do bass heavy music.

The Rokit’s are no longer called that. They are now officially the RP-series and as I said in my first reply the RP6s are the best compromise between size and bass response. We are currently at G(eneration) 3 and those are a significant improvement over G2s (still a good speaker by the way).

The VXT is the next step up and really a different level speaker. They do sound better than the RPs, easy to tell in A-B comparison tests. They are also significantly more expensive. If you are not heavily into high end production, music mastering or mixing, I’d not spend that kind of money on them as the RP6s will serve you just fine.
