My two cents….SPL is the true key. Sound pressure level is the final result of watts and speaker efficiency. You want your speakers to be capable of delivering at least of clarity 100dB SPL each. Learn about dB from an spl point of view. Learn about the rule of 10 (10dB more sounds twice as loud). Learn that double the speakers (eg 2 speakers) only increases loudness by 3dB. ) so if you have 2 speakers pumping 100dB of spl the actual spl is 103dB). My serious recommendation is that every mobile DJ if they are building and running a PA should do a course in sound technology even if just for the basics of how sound systems work. I cannot stress the importance of obtaining this knowledge. 8)

This is very important information and I really appreciate your two cents. I have actually massively increased my speaker and setup budget, figured I may aswell do it properly, once! I don’t want the stress of hiring equipment or wondering if my speakers are going to last the night without overheating or failing. So took a 6 month interest free finance option and have ordered the JBL EON 515XT Active Speakers and a JBL EON 518s 18″ Active sub. I am hoping these will have the ability to perform and perform again and again for years to come! Beside’s I don’t wana be one of those bedroom DJ’s turning up to DJ someone’s wedding with some £200 speakers and a tacky piece of star cloth, quality equipment will hopefully pay for itself! Now I just hope I can fit them into the back of a large estate car with the seats down or I’m going to have to buy a van aswell!

There is something (or a lot really) to be said for showing up like a pro, especially at weddings and such 🙂
