the first rule of trouble shooting:
    isolate the problem.

this means switching out each piece of gear until you figure out what’s not working.

the simplest thing is to plug the speakers directly into the computer.

btw, never use the wrong power supply.

I don’t think the problem will be the speakers.. 127dB is a lot!

Do you own a mixer? Could you run audio through that before sending it to the speakers? Maybe try a different source? (Laptop soundcard? Phone?)

I also don’t know how a power adaptor can have “Ohms” and how this relates to the volume? Ohms are a measure of resistance – something that power adaptors generally don’t have. I also don’t know how plugging a different adaptor in can mean that the VU meters stop working?

I would try to borrow a friend’s S4 (or hire one for a day if you can) to see if that fixes the problem.

Other than that, an external soundcard would work fine. Personally I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 for DJing from (I don’t use a controller) and love it – high audio ouptput, hardware controls, headphone jack on it (the 2i4 lets you have a separate headphone mix to the speakers whereas the 2i2 doesn’t).. it does all I need and more. An alternative is the Numark DJIO (a lot cheaper) which does the same job but does without the Mic Inputs, which aren’t needed for DJing..

I very much doubt there is anything wrong with the speakers. The best way to check would be to plug your phone into the back and see how loud it is then? The volume output from your phone should be lower than the output from your controller (slightly) but if it is louder then you know where the issue s.

Sorry for the late reply! Thank you guys so much! I wasn’t sure what I was talking about when I said “ohms.” I meant to say amps and volts for my dc power adapter. I took advice from both of you and here is what I found:

I ran the speakers through different sources and noticed a HUGE sound difference! Plugging my Mac into the speakers sounded awful, much worse than it did with the controller. I also tried a different dj software (Cross Dj) and set my levels to be even. I found out that compared to Traktor with the same even levels, Cross Dj was much louder. This could be because the audio setting was set to “Core Audio” in Cross whereas you needed a driver in order to use the controller with Traktor. I’m unsure if Numark will update the drivers especially if it is discontinued! I want to see how a separate audio interface will do, but maybe it isn’t worth it since I should get smaller, lighter speakers anyway (College is coming up and my mom won’t always be there to help carry equipment). The same motive also applies to the controller. By getting a smaller controller, it is more portable. Again, thanks guys for your awesome input!

UPDATE: I figured out the issue was with the power adapter provided with my 4Trak. The seller gave me an after-market adapter, causing it to feel loose in the audio interface.
