There are thousands of threads about this on the internet, as a dj surely you should have some sort of prior knowledge or ideas of what you like…
Your best bet is too go out onto the internet and find a few controllers and ask about them to see what people think, also the kind of music you play would help, your price limit and what platform you are going to be running it on (windows or mac). if you want to use digital vinyl/cd or complete controller based setup.

if you have any other software already (you said musician so do you have ableton?)

Digital dj’ing is such a big realm that its hard to just say “I think you should get this…”

most software comes with Itunes intergration or at least click and drag from Itunes into a deck.

as far as easy simple controls, nearly all programs out there let you map software-controllers how you want so in fact you can have a loop button that actually works as a play button or a bass knob thats a volume knob etc….

its all about how you work as a person and what youd like. check out http://www.htfr.com and see what controllers interest you.

From your spec, and as you’re currently software-agnostic, I’d say go for the Vestax VCI-300 Mk II. It’s a very “simple” controller, with “simple” software, that is high quality, no bells and whistles, and a good internal sound card. It will let you get on with the job of “just playing music”. Serato ITCH has good iTunes integration, better than Traktor.

As for the soundcard quality question, nowadays even consumer soundcards have pretty high quality. Especially in real-life usage as a DJ (in bars, clubs) ANY soundcard will do just fine (sound quality wise). The difference is in the drivers stability and OS compatibility. For example, you might want to stay clear from manufacturers that are reluctant to update their drivers to current OSes or have not yet implemented 64bit drivers’ compatibility. A search in the manufacturers’ websites often reveals a lot about the quality of support from the manufacturer – take that under serious consideration when deciding which one to buy.

In simple words to answer your question, built-in or not, it really doesn’t matter – what matters is the credibility of the manufacturer.

well spoken, softcore. Too much rubbish is spouted about soundcard quality nowadays by people who should just crack open a beer and get spinning! đŸ˜€

    Thanks for the replies.

I’ve looked a bit into the VCI-300, but it seems to have bad (faulty) sound card, so I think I’ll find something else, probably the just-released NI S2. I’m kinda on a budget, meaning that I’m not keen on trying out a bunch of controllers only to have to return or resell them if they suck. The S2, and the S4, seem to be very high quality, from what I can see, so it’s down to which one to choose. But I think the S4 would be a bit of an overkill considering my current level and needs.

And btw., I’m on a macbook pro, but I guess all never controllers are compatible nowadays.

I’m pretty sure I read that that problem was fixed in the MK2 version.

“I’ve looked a bit into the VCI-300, but it seems to have bad (faulty) sound card, so I think I’ll find something else” – It was fine in the Mk I version, I’ve been using it professionally for years.

Okay, thanks Phil. Now I’m just gonna buy one, before I get any new input or ideas.
