Well fits of all I organise all my music in iTunes and do not ever touch it in VDJ.
What I usually do is I organise via the smart playlist features. I have several smart playlists which are genre playlists (e.g. “house”, “deep”, “belearic”,…) and I have rating playlists (I rated all my songs depending on their energy. So 5 stars will not be a song I like the best, but with the most “energy” I feel in the song). I have several other smarties, based on most played, era of music, ….
I also have a few manual playlists that are my “hit rotation” or personal Top 40s again genre specific and overall top 40s.
When I prepare a set I usually do the following: I make a manual playlist for the set and start adding music. Usually it only takes me about 15min until there is so much music in there that I need to stop. I then look at how long my set should be (for example 2 hours) and keep dragging songs out again until I have double that time (in that example 4 hours of music). The songs I pulled out and some other songs I put in a “set backup” list.
And there I am done…
(All my files are auto-tagged by MixedInKey, so I rarely do manual tagging.)
Now for VDJ, at least in VDJ Pro you can easily add collumns and re-arrange them by right-clicking on the header of the playlist view. I usually have them with Track Number – Artist – Title – Time – Key – Comments – BPM listed.
