Regarding your comment of “if you don’t know anyone from the club, it’s impossible to get booked” I think in this industry there is definitely some element of that wherever you are…
Though the act of getting involved in and contributing to a scene with the ultimate aim of getting gigs out of it will inevitably end up with knowing people in the club anyway…

    1) You are primarily there for the crowd, other more precisely, to keep the crowd happy so they come more often, stay longer and … DRINK MORE. That, my dear friends is the only reason venues pay you to play!
If you only want to play YOUR music, become a world-class producer or stay in your bedroom.

    2) Get to know the places you want to be playing and the people that work there. Don’t focus on the manager primarily, but talk to the people at the door, the bar staff and even the current DJ. It’s how you create rapport and work on your network.

    1. DO you think the place will exploded if you play the “folk music”, if the answer, yes…
go ahead and swallow your pride and play them
Its only a beginning of your career and you already picky to play which music you want to play,
if you really hate hate it, just like Chuck recommended stay in your bedroom, or maybe create your own event which you can play what you like

    2. “Also, for a club manager, if you are not ‘the big name’, does it look (lets say) hilarious giving him a business card of yours?”
As you stated its a “business card”, so it doesnt really have nothing to do with big name or whataver, its a business thing, its just a professional way

    – Off the record question,
Welp its kind of a common sense anyway, if you dont know anybody from that club how you going to get a gig there anyway ?
Someone, anybody has to make that First Contact
