You described a good situation where I would choose to set to mono.

If I am not sure how a venue is wired (often the venue is wired mono to begin with!) I’ll usually take the mono route, just to be safe.

Best is to talk to the house tech and ask for his advice. He’s the one that knows the venue and the PA best.

The “house tech” is whichever bartender happens to be working that night. 🙂

One thing that I did notice is that the house mixer (DJM-350) had just one RCA to XLR cable coming out of the left channel of the master output. That cable went into the left speaker. So I guess it’s wired mono?

I played a gig there with software set to stereo. My controller went into the house mixer the standard way (RCA into one of the channels). Does that mean I was only pumping out one half of the stereo signal to the whole PA? If I set it to mono for next time the full signal would be summed to all the speakers then?

If you set your gear to mono, both L and R RCA will offer the full signal, so if the mixer uses only one, then yes, in that case you will have the full signal in mono out of the mixer out.

If the mixer has a mono switch, just run stereo in from your controller and the mixer will take care of the summing.

I’ve been told by other DJ’s to always spin in Mono. Reason being is if the crowd will only hear some of the music and miss the other part. Example: Some oldies favor vocals on the right channel while instruments are mostly on the left.

I’m not sure if I buy into this if you simply ADD MOAAARR POWER!!! however it’s very situational.

Use whatever makes sense. If it’s a small place and your speakers are not spread to far apart, Stereo is great. If it’s a larger place, go for mono to insure all aspects of the songs are not lost.

    Depends on the speaker setup.

If, like I normally do, I am just using a pair of speakers to fill a room and they are positioned at one end down the dance floor, I use stereo. Things sound better (your music has more space in it – it’s how it was mixed after all) in stereo.

BUT – If I am DJing at a venue that doesn’t use pair’s of speakers down a rectangular shaped room, I use mono. Just to make sure that everyone can hear everything – who knows how it is wired up if it is any more complicated than run Left down one side of the floor and right down the other…

If in doubt though, use mono. It’s the safer option.
