ParticipantHave you used it?
How well does it work?
I searched for software, but most seem to have conflicting reviews; so I’m looking for something that people here have tried and found to work well.
Here are some of the results I have come across (no particular order)
TuneUp – Add on for iTunes and Media Player – many reviews as of version 2.8 (and later) that it doesn’t work well. Company responded to one post saying that it has changed ownership as of 3.0. Still many complaints after 3.0.
AllDup – Several reviews state that it works well, but user interface is complicated.
Duplicate Cleaner – Mixed reviews between working and not working. Multiple people comment that the interface is complicated.
DupeGuru Music Edition – Mixed reviews of working and not. Some complaints that it misses files. Some complaints about difficult interface.
Similarity – Mixed review of working and not. Some complaints about “advertised as free” but free version has serious limits and purchase was needed to get functionality. Some complaints about interface.

ParticipantI used duplicate cleaner to clean up and old pc once.. It worked pretty well and did clear all the duplicates – but I have no idea if it would work for comparing quality of audio files.
It was quite thorough though..

ParticipantBeatunes has a feature like this where it doesn’t just compare the song titles, artists, etc, but also the overall look in some kind of way that I don’t understand. So it may find duplicates with different names.
There’s a demo, but I don’t know if this feature is in it.October 13, 2015 at 5:28 pm #2271271DJ Wyld1
ParticipantThanks for the beaTunes reference. I just did a google search and found a review written by DDJT. http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2014/08/review-video-beatunes-4-music-fixer-playlist-app/

ParticipantProgress report:
I added my library to beaTunes. Once it scanned the HDD; 2 options came up, Analyse and Inspect.
Analyse: This took 2 full days to complete, but added BPM, Color, Key, and some other stuff.
Inspect: This took several hours and came up with several different categories of issues it found with my library:
Consistency, General, Sorting, Spelling, Title. Each category has a number (how many issues it found in that category). Now, the “bad news” – the program doesn’t allow you to fix the issues without purchasing a license. Guess I’m off to spend some money. Just wanted to let people know the limitations of the free trial.

ModeratorI have used several programs for this. Some good, some bad, some so-so. At the end of the day, you still have to go through the duplicates list manually to indicate which tracks you want to throw out. You’ll be looking at track quality, length, version/mix, etx.
Whatever tool you will be using, I can promise it will get you trhough quite a few wintery nights.

ParticipantI’m mainly looking for a decent tool that will help me identify and eliminate duplicates, preferably on a quality basis (keep the highest quality an delete the rest).
I’ve been at it with beaTunes for a few days now, and I’m starting to think I need to look for a different tool. BeaTunes is great for certain things, but it’s not really handling duplicates the way I had hoped for.
If you have a suggestions for any the ones you put in the “some good” category; I’m interested in which ones you liked and a brief reason why you liked it.

ModeratorI think the last one I used was Duplicate File Remover. You can set it to only look at music files (saving mountains of time of course) and to look for identical content rather than identical filenames.
In the results list it will pick the highest quality (I believe you can set these parameters), show the duplicates and automatically select the duplicates. Then you can bulk remove all the duplicates in one go, or go over them 1-by-1 if you want to be sure not to throw something away you really didn’t want to throw away.
By the same token, you won’t do this for your carefully handpicked core collection tracks which will all be unique and one-of. So if you throw something out (for example keeping the long version instead of the radio edit or vice versa), it’s gonna be a request and as DJs we can handle a 7 minute track and use only 3 mins of it or make a 3 min radio mix into a 5 minute remix (loops anyone?). On the spot you’ll solve the problem, offline you can always make a note during the night and correct it when you get back, swapping out the wrong version for the right one. Either because you kept all your tracks (because you are keeping albums together after ripping them for example) or by buying the right version.
Again, haven’t used it in a while and trying it out just now I got a new version downloaded. Not sure what’s new.
Hope that helps some.

ParticipantHey DJ Vintage,
Thanks for the Suggestion.
Duplicate File Remover was easy to use and did a pretty good job. I currently have about 70 files left on my main drive that are still showing as “duplicates”. However, many of them have bad Meta Data. So that’s something I’ll still have to go through and manually fix, but at least I’ve gotten rid of a lot of garbage.
There’s still a lot of work to do, but at least this tool helped minimize the amount of time it would have taken otherwise. Overall, I give this tool a 4.5 star rating (5 stars being the highest).
