I personally always tell them I don’t have the song and try to stay nice and smile. If they ask me to youtube it or whatever, I just act like its not possible on the set up that we have running :p

I always smile and tell them “I’ll see if I have it and I’ll try to work it in”… even if I have no plans on playing it. Had someone request a hip hop song 30 minutes before closing time when I was deep into playing a house set… No way was that going to happen that late in the night, but I’m not going to explain to her the whole process of programming and how that would be a train wreck at this point in the night.

I completely agree with this… You always get these wannabe skank girls coming up to your booth, asking you in a very ditzy blonde manner saying “Uhmm excuse me… can you please play some Rihanna or some David Guetta?”
    -_____- speechless…….

    This is the key.

Yes, they are annoying. (And I’m 43 by the way) What’s annoying is you figure they would have better taste in music. What’s even more annoying is when they carry an attitude with their requests. Another annoying thing is when I’m rocking the joint with one genre, someone attempts getting me to change the music. I feel like strangling them when they do that. As for losing gigs for being a snob, it depends. If the agreement is playing a mixture of music including songs with lame rap lyrics, I’d go ahead and the play song (even if I didn’t like it). If the agreement was a particular genre, but someone asks for music outside of that genre? I would politely refuse the request. Then, I would write a nasty blog about how stupid people are. Now, let’s bring up something D-Jam talks about sometimes. Let’s say you agreed to play house. Yet, some trixie comes asking for Britney Spears. Plus the owner or promoter tells you to play it. That’s when your snobbery is truly justified and if it meant losing gigs with the owner, so be it. Plus letting the customers dictate over the DJ is just plain lame. Age isn’t your problem. You just have good taste in music.

I’d be more than happy to lose sets if its playing music I don’t enjoy playing. Some may not agree but I would rather play awesome music to an empty club than play crap music to a full club…unless you’re looking to score lol

    i have two main techniques…..

    1) pretend to have a look fot the song…..”oh no i havent got it” with a bit of a disapointing look on my face, “I love that song too!…I will have to download it some time this week, so i have it for you next time your in”…. and just sort of agree that they have choosen an awsome song but its just unfortunate i dont have it. (even tho the song is garbage and un-appropriate)

    2) this is more for the drunken ##### …… and this technique is simply too say yes i will play it in a few songs time……then just accidently on purpose forget to play it. i found that they are that drunk they will not remembr anyway.

i know these techniques seem awfull, but at then end of the day, i am their to play to the masses, and not just for one stuck up or druken idiot. if a request fits in to what i think the dancefloor is wanting then i will play it, or if loads of people are coming up asking for the same tune, then chances are i will try and fit it in, becasue thats what the “majority” of the crowed are wanting.
