MemberDubstep is not my thing personally. As far as mainstream goes. Just about all genres within EDM have their commercial counterparts. This was happening way back , nothing new at all. But it’s worlds apart from what gets heard in what was the underground. Still the fan base of the underground sounds of EDM exist , the commercial stuff has not and will not change that.

ParticipantEverything is cyclical. You notice Benny Benassi isn’t the big talked about name anymore? In the past he was.
I’m glad at least EDM Grammys are going to EDM artists as opposed to pop artists who made club remixes of their new tunes. Believe me, in the past the people they nominated for that award was a complete joke.

MemberIs it the end or beginning ….I’d probably say neither & that Skrillex winning a Grammy probably won’t effect the dubstep scene.

Daft Punk and The Chems have both won grammies yeah? So not always true.
Funnilly enough didn’t Skrillex win best remix for his remix of Benny Benassi.

Memberit’s still not a genre that’s taken seriously though. It’s mainstream, but the music snobs who vote on such things will continue to disregard it. Which is fine by me, I don’t think EDM comes anywhere near traditional music in transmitting emotions through a song. The genre has about 3 settings, relaxing, depressing, and energetic. Part of my goal in my production is to translate such an emotional level as say a Radiohead song into an EDM genre, without completely annihilating the “danceability.”

Nooooo…I meant even before that.
Before they gave Frankie Knuckles a Grammy they would nominate things like Cindi Lauper or Cher for some dance remix they had on their new single. Actual EDM artists, even Daft Punk (before the robot helmets) were left in the cold.
Nowadays we may not like everyone nominated or winning based on our tastes, but I’ll say most of them deserve to be there. I’d rather see Skrillex win a Grammy as opposed to it going to Celine Dion for a dance tune she might have made or something like that.

Everything the Grammy’s do should be taken with a grain of salt… There was also that time when Metallica lost to Jethro Tull for best metal album or something… Big award shows are just a popularity contest anyways.

I wholeheartedly agree.
It’s why I wish people would stop making such a big drama over the DJ Mag Top 100.

ParticipantI dont consider Skrillex just a dubstep artist he uses all elements of EDM and Hip Hop .I totally dropped off of House Music once I graduted high school in 96′ .But scrolling through EDM music two years ago his Scary Monsters Ep fell in my lap and I fell in love with EDM music now sure he has dubstep tracks but his music is well produced and his live shows are amazing !
I dont think he hurts any genre if anything he has opened the door for more producers to get the limelight not these seld indulgent a holes that are pop stars they ruin music.February 16, 2012 at 9:55 pm #15099DJ
ParticipantI read an article that mentioned the special meeting that the Grammy committee held one year in order to discuss if Sasha’s Involver (or maybe Involv2er, I don’t recall) was applicable, and thus eligible, for the Dance Album category, as many had suggested. I thought it was funny, interesting, and perhaps a testament to Sasha’s type of production that they have these kinds of discussions.

MemberTo be honest, I believe that this is a great opportunity for new artists to emerge within the EDM community and be recognized for their talents. Watching the Grammys I felt proud, not only for Skrillex but because it was the first time that they aired a special within the Grammys that tributed to the EDM scene.
When Foo Fighters, David Grohl, won a Grammy he said: “To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing in to a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do…it’s not about what goes on in a computer.” Then he went on to perform with Deadmau5 😀
I feel that this is just the beginning, and I am looking forward to what direction EDM will take in 5-10 years from now.

Participant90% People watching grammys – What’s with the guy in the Micky Mouse helmet? DeadMau5?
100% of those people the next day “Let me google deadmau5” “Oh its dead mouse not dead-mall-5”
=EDM awareness. Fine by me
