ParticipantI play the same records everyday I don’t need to listen to what I do .. Its my party trick and respect that instead of hating on it . If u doubt it come in the both or try do it yourself before u judge !! Ok .. Nuff said .. SA”
His sets can’t be very interesting if plays the same tunes everytime and is it just me or is putting a pre-mixed cd on not a very good party trick?August 11, 2011 at 8:25 am #1001380Cybertrash

The absurdity of a DJ saying “I don’t listen to what I do” just struck me in full force.
Why on earth is this guy famous?

MemberWell I also think that his explanation was solid; I don’t know much about fireworks, but I guess the tricky part about it is the delay (several seconds) between the tech guy pressing a button (or whatever he does), and the explosion; so if the idea is to have synchronized explosions with a moment of the music, I really understand that the best way to do it is to use a pre-recorded mini mix.
I’ve seen a lot of big rock concerts, and in some of them the big finale fireworks weren’t perfect mainly because the music was just a bit too fast or slow (Metallica and The Smashing Pumpkins comes to mind); the fireworks were very cool, but now and then not perfectly synchronized with the music. I guess the pyro tech guy is totally depending on pitch to do his job, so if the pitch is not exactly the one expected, things go out of sync. So i honestly don’t see any problem with a pre recorded mini mix for fireworks purpose AFTER the DJ set, despite the DJ still being in the booth.
Also I believe that the pyro guy is the one in real need of headphones, not the DJ; and the pyro guy must also consider the speed of sound versus the speed of light. Now that’s latency! 😀
So I think that the pyro guy needs pre-recorded stuff, not the DJ.

MemberI don’t think there’s anything wrong with it – I mean how many DJs have pre recorded mini sets for bathroom breaks etc? I for one like having a primetime/closing mix that I can throw on and go out into the crowd and just get silly for a little bit! 😉

ParticipantI’ve been back and forth on this one for days. I agree on the idea of a DJ perhaps making a pre-recorded megamix for reasons like a bathroom break or even for some special part of the show with a visual effects setup that needs to be in sync.
However, I watched this video and I don’t see that. I see a guy who fears a bad blend so much that he’ll cheat. The set itself was energetic, but nothing special that any DJ couldn’t do normally. You can’t claim the visual show as the reason for this because from an audio standpoint, you’re not bringing anything interesting to the table. I’ve seen light guys in Chicago here who did amazing shows with a live DJ going. Noting planned, but he felt the music enough that he was able to play his lights to that music…and would do special blasts and such on tunes he knew.
The pyro thing is NOT where I’ll admonish Angello. Again, for something special like that it’s an excuse, especially if he produced some amazingly-edited megamix to play. I’m talking about at 3:40 when he “brought in” One More Time by Daft Punk. The song “magically blended in” while he was fixing his hair and getting a smoke.
I’m sorry…there is NO EXCUSE for that. If you’re going there, then get a laptop and use a sync. Doing what he did is no better than lip syncing a live show. When you’re paid thousands to play in front of a massive crowd that’s paying $20-$40 each to get in, you don’t do that.
My biggest fear is this will become a precedent. We’ll see big names toss out the “DJ” aspect of it all and people will pay big money basically for a mix CD played on a big system with lights and guy doing Jesus poses.
If you’re not going to do the job, then don’t bother…or the crowds should get an eyeful and think twice before shelling out big money for a “big name DJ”.

MemberI don’t even believe in bathroom break mixes… If you need a break, mix in a song you know is long enough, that you can easily mix something in with when you return, and make it quick..
Concerts have had lights and pyrotechnics for years, that is no excuse. When a rock concert synchs in some fireballs the band doesn’t kill their amps and play a CD. You rehearse and if something goes wrong, something goes wrong. But the absolute LAST thing you do at a live performance is fake it. Lost a lot of respect for this guy… His explanation was even worse. “I don’t need to prove I can mix, I’m a pro mixer. I spend more time mixing than I do with my family!” Well that’s all well and good, but it’s like Metallica saying they don’t need to play live because they’ve already “made it.” Boooo Steve, booooo.August 16, 2011 at 4:38 pm #5903Benny Mackney

… and then you get stuck in the crowd or something stupid like that and you’re absolutely screwed. If you can make it back in the first song, then good for you, mix out and no-one will know. On the other hand, some drunk guy starts hanging off your arms requesting lame songs and you take a while getting him off but it doesn’t matter because you have that safety net there.
As for Steve, I think he’s a bit arrogant but from what I know of pyrotechnics, it’s near-impossible to sync live.

ParticipantI agree with the idea of making bathroom-break mixes. In the past when you had two guys in the booth it was easier to take breaks. Now with people being tight on money, it ends up as one guy on his own.

I agree…hence why I only gave him flack for the first nine minutes of that video when he wasn’t doing his pyro show.

MemberSteve personally sent me a direct message on twitter claiming that he wasn’t “faking” it, but I personally don’t buy it. Coming from somebody who sampled a whole melody (VFH2 128BPM Capone Melody 1, specifically) to create a track, I have very little to no respect for him. But that’s just my personal opinion.

ParticipantI’d point out 3:30 in that video and ask him how he psychically mixed in One More Time with his back turned.
