KeymasterUsed MacBook?
– Boot into recover mode, wipe it with a new install of Mac OS X.
– Run App store and install all update available for your machine.
– Install DJ software
– Put music on laptop
– Have funMarch 26, 2013 at 9:28 pm #38376Alex Wray
ParticipantYup used
15″ 2009 MBP Unibody, 2.66 Ghz, 4Gb RAM (that will be bumped to 8 Gb), Video card with separate RAM, With a good working battery, and already wiped and restored with a fresh copy of Mountain Lion. Other than a few dings on the corners, and a CD drive full or bread crumbs (that I can replace in like 20 minutes), its just about perfectMarch 26, 2013 at 10:46 pm #38385DJ Vintage
ModeratorHave fun with it. I have a 2011 model. Got it just for my music and DJ stuff.
My big tip would be to get an SSD for it. Great performance boost. Depending on the amount of music you intend to carry around and your budget, you can either get a bigger SSD (256GB is pretty decent budget-wise these days) and put everything on it, or you can get a smaller one 64GB-128GB and stick it in a special bracket that fits into the bay that houses your optical (CD/DVD) drive.
I’d say it is the single most impressive performance gain you can get (even more than doubling your ram to 8GB!)

Greetinx,
C.I’m thinking i’ll keep the CD drive (for burning mixtapes, things like that), but definitely swapping out the SATA HDD. Will basically any SSD drive work? I’m also thinking of getting this as well

Greetinx,
C.100% agree.
Keep your eye on Tiger Direct – they frequently offer decent sale prices. You won’t go wrong with a Samsung 840 series (or 830 series for tha matter.) I’ve used both to upgrade both MBP and my son’s. OCZ is also a popular choice (there is a monster thread on the subject at Macrumors.com)

ModeratorYep, the Samsungs seem to be a good choice (apparently they are one of Apples OEM suppliers for SSDs that come factory standard with MBP). OCZ is also good. Pays to read a few recent blog posts on this subject (recent, because SSD is a very fast developing platform, so 6 month old news is often already that, old!) before buying.
The miniDrive gizmo seems like a nice gagdet to have. They portray it as a great backup solution, but I am not to sure about that as it is designed to stay inside your MBP. And good backup practice dictates that you keep your backups in a physically seperate place (if someone steals your MBP, they get your backup with it). Keep in mind that although relatively fast, SD-cards are slower than your SSD would be. I don’t think I would use it for primary use (i.e. stuff I need to access regularly like my music).

Participantyeah, it wouldn’t be for that, i’m definitely getting an external harddrive. As for security, I already have a K-Lock. I’m also looking into opening it up and taking part of the unibody to Things Remembered or something, and getting my info engraved on the inside of the case, and also tracking software like Prey that can remote lock, data wipe, snap photos, that kind of thing

ParticipantI need to buy a K-lock … need to check out Prey, sounds good, but I did try the demo for MacAppBlocker which worked a treat. You can password protect apps/docs easily. Or you could take the poor mans route and create a password encrypted Disk Image.
Oh and Tiger Direct has a 250 GB Samsung 840 series on sale today for $159 (I’d post the link, but I don’t know if that is a breach of the forum etiquette.)

ParticipantHere’s the link to Prey (Oh, and i post links all the time, so i guess its okay as long as it’s relevant and not spam)
I mean, GPS tracking, Data/password wipe, remote camera access, Remote lockdown, and for free? Amazing!
