There really is (and has always been) ONE HD25 only, as far as specs are concerned. They all have the same innards.

At one point there were 7 or so versions and then came the Alu Anniversary edition.

They now have the Classic, Lite and Plus. The difference is still only in the configuration. The Plus features two cables and an extra set of earpads (velours).

From a sound quality perspective they are all identical … with the possible exception of the Alu’s. According to SOME high-end ears, the alu’s sound (even) better than the ones with plastic cups, something to do with the rigidity and material features that the alu cups bring to the table.

I just bought (and pimped) a set of alu’s that I have wanted to buy since they came out a few years ago. I think they are no longer produced as I had to look hard to find a pair. Frankly, I am not hearing the difference. Being a 5 year HD25 user, they sound like I expect them to. Now, pimped with red velours headband inserts and earpads and with a coiled instead of straight cable, they actually look pretty sharp for DJ-ing).

So, pick whichever version tickles your fancy most (visually), as audio it really doesn’t matter (or perhaps very very slightly better in the case of the alu’s).

Honestly I never heard any difference between my 25s and the Alu… of course my 25s are not any edition as I think at least every part of them has been replaced at least once and they still rock 😛

Just one quick note as a follow up to Vintage’s comments – my understanding is that the new Light model is not the same guts as the rest of them. Different hardware, sound profile and fit.

You are correct. The HD25 comes in 3 flavors: HD25, HD25 Plus and HD25-1 II Basic. Those are all identical, only what in the box is different I think (cable, pouch, extra pads). The HD25 Light, is a different model with different innards.

    I stand corrected.

You can certainly be forgiven! They haven’t done a great job of making it easy to figure out what is what. Even their website is quite the pain to navigate. I guess breaking down to a limited number of models is a small step in the right direction though…
