Nope, best advice we can give you as a

      DIGITAL

DJ site, is to NOT spend your money on CDJs and analogue mixers 😀

Seriously though, it’s an investment in obsolete technology. Especially the higher end CDJs (and you don’t want a set of used 400s) were hardly ever in the private domain, meaning anything second hand out there has been used in venues, usually long and VERY hard. Always by people who’s gear it wasn’t, so the amount of careby users would have been lower than they would have given if it WERE their own.

I’ve seen DJs smashing buttons on CDJs that you wouldn’t believe. Couldn’t have done it harder if they’d used a hammer. I’ve seen drinks spilled over gear, smoke (both the DJ kind and the tobacco kind) and oil crackers (hazers) running all night every night (and that stuff DOES get into your knobs and faders). All stuff that eventually leads to often invisible damage.

So if you are still set on going (way) back to analogue, I’d say getting it from a reputable company who traded them in, had them refurbished and who are willing to give you some warranty on them would be your best bet. I know Pioneer themselves have a refurbished offering (albeit limited) on their site somewhere. Buying from other (online) sources would scare me more. I’d have to be able to see it play, play with it myself and even then I’d think twice. And I know what to look for, so I consider myself slightly less “vulnerable” to buying stuff that isn’t as good as advertised.

No reputable online site that I know of off-hand that would fit your needs. But perhaps our other readers can chime in here.

Depends on what you want to do with it. I use my allegedly out of date kit to gig with twice a week, and while it is primarily a digital setup I wanted a modular kit list simply because I do not trust any setup based around any sort of computer to work 100% of the time.
However if it’s for mucking about with at home then Vintage has the right of it, get a controller and you’re probably better off buying new. If second hand is still your thing, then Why Buy New have a good rep from what I’ve heard.

Staz, if you HAVE the kit already, I can see how you’d keep on using it. But I know the prices of used CDJ-850s and they are either expensive and trashed, or more expensive and only so-so. And yes, I realize you might get lucky and find a pair that belonged to an old lady that only took them for a spin on dry, sunny days 😀 , but the odds of that happening are heavily against him.

So, to spend that kind of money NOW to buy this kit is -imho- not a clever move. I’d rather spend my money on a XDJ-RX -which most likely costs less than a set of used 850s with a djm-800 or something – which you can use as a stand-alone mixer (hook up your iPad for backup), as a controller for your Serato set-up with your laptop or (if the laptop does crash) just by switching to USB continue with RekordBox.

    Hope that makes sense.

And if you get a good computer, nothing will fail.
I have hooked up a backup like Vintage said for 5 years now and have never needed it. The Macbook does not crash out of thin air, it just works as reliable as any CDJ would.

However funny side story: I had a DJM-2000 Nexus crash on me (not that anyone uses that monster live) in a test setup hehe but I think it was still the prototype firmware, so no bashing here, I am sure they work fine now.
