4. YesNobody is born with scratching skills, if you’re not struggling in the beginning you’re doing something very wrong. Start easy with some baby scratches and work your way up from there. There are complete tutorials on youtube that can show you the basics, no need to wait for any class.

ModeratorPerhaps a little enhancement on Marco’s answers (to the point, but VERY short LOL).
1) Indeed, if your deck loads, plays sound normally then you can also scratch with it. There is no scratching version of the software
2) I am not sure what you mean by “using headphones”. If you mean your headphones are set to master, then you should hear what you would normally hear through speakers. So no, that would not be an issue. If you mean something else, please tell us EXACTLY how you have your headphone setup.
3) Even if you are slow, you should be able to have the x-fader to the other side in time to hear something. Doubtful that this is the problem.
4) DDJT’s scratching for controller course is a very good example and proof of being able to scratch on even the most modest controller (I think tutor Steve demonstrates on like a 50 bucks Hercules controller at one point).
Hope that helps.

ParticipantThanks guys I’ll just keep plugging away then and keep watching tutorials!!!
I know I’m awful and need tons more practice….but i can see leaps and bounds improvement. Especially now that I got a Ahhhhh and yeahhhhh samples to practice baby scratches on.
I didn’t know if not being able to set virtual turntable setting to 33 1/3 in full serato like tutor Steve does in his how to set up the numark video was hindering me

ModeratorIt shouldn’t be. Just remember that the trick is to pace yourself. Don’t go, oh … I can 4 out of 10 baby scratches right, I am ready for the next step. Develop muscle memory. Don’t move on to the next thing before you are truly ready, contain your enthusiasm (I understand it’s there, just keep it in check).
You’ll be grateful later if you go this route and all this stuff has become second-nature and becomes something your combined brain/body performs without too much conscious thought.
To get there, you got it, PACED practice practice practice.

Keymaster1. Do i need to buy serato dj full
No. But the added features and effects will make you buy Serato DJ full version anyways. Also the iZotope effects help with several scratches (transformer sounds wicked with a bitcruncher).
2. am i having issues because i am using headphones and not speakers
Usually no, but some people have different sound perception with headphones so you might be one of them and some cheap speakers would help you.
3. am i just not good enough with the cross fader and flipping it quick enough
The thing is not overthinking it and start very very slow. Like get a hip hop beat with only 60 to 70 bpm and start there, then slowly move up the bpm.
Start with the most simple scratch (baby scratch) and MASTER it before you move on. Especially when you master the baby and its variations (no crossfader stutter etc.) your jog hand will be so automated that you can focus on the crossfader more.4. do turntable tutorials translate to digital controllers (i been watching studio scratches dj short-e shes unbelievable)
To some degree only. That is why we invented our scratching for controller DJs course.
Also not everyone is skilled in teaching, our Steve has mastered teaching and he fought several superstar DJs how to scratch…Check out this:

And for some motivation:

ParticipantDj Angelo is SUCH a monster!! There is a crazy vid of him and short-e each on one turn table sharing a crossfader that broke my brain 😀 thanks for the motivation terry!
Ok thanks guys..
I’m going to download some people under the stairs instrumental tracks they are nice and slow and I’m going to do nothing but practice baby scratches for a couple weeks for an hour or so a day before I even touch the crossfader. I also think I need to learn how to count beats a bit. And I think I need to slow down and not be so crazy about pushing before I got stuff down.
Once I get this down and know I’m going to stick with it I’m totally picking up a terminal mix love those jogs.
Love the help guys

ModeratorCounting beats … now there is a good basic skill to have ingrained in your every cell!

ParticipantKeep at it is the Key phrase here.
I am re-learning to scratch on a controller after a 25 year gap from vinyl. Some days it flows, others it wont even get out of bed, then you have to incorporate it into mixes which is another lesson all together hahahahaGood luck man

ParticipantI really like the video. In my opinion, if you have set your headphone to master then there is no difference between speakers and headphone. With respect to scratching, initially start practicing small scratch techniques. Download some videos from the net and practice it.

ParticipantOK you guys were totally right…..I got a good hip hop beat and have been doing nothing but the fresh sample baby scratches and been trying to do it to some of the beats so its not random sounding….I was trying to move waaaaaaaay to fast. I haven’t even touched the fader in a week. I can tell that its sounding more consistent 🙂 YaY!

ParticipantHey there, glad to see that slowing things down has helped. I have a Mixtrack Pro 2, and have recently started using it with Serato DJ instead of Intro. There are a few things that might make a difference to you, such as the option of split cue. I have also noticed that the cue/headphones output is quite a bit louder on the full Serato DJ software( I also changed computers, so that may be part of the cause). This video is one I watch from time to time, showing scratching on the MTP2. I don’t think he’s using Serato in this video though. There are loads of videos online, DJTLM and DJ Angelo both have some great ones, among others. The scratching for controller DJs course has been great so far, can’t wait to have time to get stuck in with some more practice and lessons. Keep it up, and keep us posted! Moonshadow
