KeymasterFirst of all: Where are you located? Culture towards music largely depends on where you are.
Then EDM is a term not a genre. House, Deep House, Trance, Psytrance,… that are genres.
So EDM (electronic dance music) is about anything that is electronic music (depends heavily on electrical instruments) and you can dance to it.So in general you could say the soundtrack to Lord of the Dance is EDM, since it depends largely on keyboards and samples to achieve Irish folk music that is dancable and sounds more like world music.
So give people something to think about.
Also we have a ton of free videos on this site and on the forum sticky. Check them out for ideas what people might want to know.

ParticipantSo we’re located in Fairfax county, Virginia, USA. Big suburban area so we’re generally caught up on trends and all.
Yes I know, thats why we called it EDM club because even most pop or rock music these days can be counted as EDM because its electronic. I think that most people in my school aren’t aware of this. The problem with my area and high schoolers in general that are overworked is that they are oftentimes apathetic, so they don’t do many activities and aren’t willing to put in effort to learn something like this. This is probably one of our main problems but that is hard to combat. We even have 2 teachers who dj but aren’t willing to stay after school because they have to go home immediately so they won’t sponsor us.
Ok I’ll look around on the site for ideas I was just reaching out on the forums for specific ideas from the public. Thanks

ParticipantPerhaps the club name itself is turning people off…? I understand why you’d want to go for a general term, such as EDM, because you’re trying to encompass a broad spectrum. But if your mission is to get like-minded people together to build and share their knowledge around mixing, production, hardware & software, then I think using a term such as EDM is exclusionary by default. I say this because when you use a very specific term, you have to take into account how people will interpret it. For example, what if there’s an entire subculture of hip hop or pop enthusiasts in your school who have a desire to learn mixing and production, but feel as though their taste in music doesn’t fit the “EDM” tag. What if there are a few bedroom warriors who are into nothing but House? I can almost guarantee you most House enthusiasts are put off by the term EDM – especially when it’s used to describe House music (even if there’s some validity to it). I think by using the term EDM you could be missing out on an entire population of people. Just my. 02.

ParticipantThanks Bill, that’s a good point and that’s also partially why I said in my first post genre conflicts aside here-unfortunately, getting people’s attention is quite a task and requires quite a bit of marketing expertise in itself. It always seems like you can never win doesn’t it? 🙂
We’re going to get back from winter break Monday so we will try out some different strategies and maybe some collaborations with other groups or teachers in school to spread word. If any of you have other suggestions or ideas, please share!

ParticipantWhat is this EDM Club do actually ? I mean do you guys have like a meeting after-school ? and if yall did what did you do ? have some discussion among the club members? what exactly is yall activity ?
My recommendation is since its in school environment, education environment, why dont yall propose for having a DJ Battle / Competition among the students? It should be easy to organize, you can do it in school auditorium or hall or in indoor basketball court, and you can invite DJ Vintage as one of the juror , you can propose to your school to back-you up, sponsor, support you for the prizes and such.
We just had our DJ Competition last year it was load of fun
Good luck, if you need any help, I be happy to help in anyway I can
