Ugh, wait. I feel bad now cause I found some posts that basically answered this question. Maybe I should have searched deeper first. Sorry I am eager to get started. I still am confused on Audio drivers though. I really don’t understand a lot of things when it comes to computers (yeah that probably means you will tell me I should get a Mac but moneyyyyy). So I have to worry about installing Audio drivers if I get a PC running Windows? Isn’t there some that will come with good drivers already?

No, due to the drivers you’re looking for aren’t hard boiled into Windows like they are with mac since they were developed by a 3rd party. (ASIO vs CORE)

Anyways, this should probably make it easy for you and I’d just have it notify you about updates so it’s not updating while you’re Djing. http://www.asio4all.com/ How ASIO works in case you’re curious: http://what-is-asio.articles.r-tt.com/

Bit o’ advice: I always keep a copy of whatever drivers I need on a thumbdrive so if it’s not working for whatever reason, I can usually just install them again and figure out what’s going on the next day when I have time to troubleshoot and usually update.

Also: Cheap PC hardware (400 dollar notebooks from target etc.) will fail you in real DJ conditions.
I have seen it time and time again and it is not a Windows problem, it is the problem of cheap hardware.
You often work in an environment where the computer is in harsh conditions: Smoke, Haze, Heat from Lamps and or Sun, high moisture due to hundreds of people sweating on a small dancefloor, more smoke, fog machines,…
All factors that will iterally kill your hardware and sadly I have seen so many beginner/warmup sets, even in bigger clubs where “they give a chance to a newcomer” and the newcomer fails badly due to failing hardware (overheating, having power issues,…).

So in the end it is not the Operating System why many DJs use Macs, it is also because the hardware is really good and stable. I just replaced my MacBook from 2008! and I played literally thousands of gigs with it in front of thousands of people.

Now of course you can have a similary good Windows Hardware if you for example buy into good hardware like HP EliteBooks, Alienware etc. however those are usually the same price if not more than a MacBook Air 13”.
For example the EliteBook Folio 1040 that I use to write this now to you, did cost about 1900 bucks.

That is why many DJs even opt to buy a used Mac for 600-800 bucks, to be on the safe side.

Thank you Titan for your amswer and those links! That was very helpful!

Terry_42, I will definitely keep that in mind. I havent entirely ruled out Macbooks, although I am always worried about buying something used so I’d probabky buy it new, despite the price, if I was really set on getting one. Also I’m not even terribly worried about the hardware right now because im only just starting and dont plan on being in the settings you described for a long time.

I’ve also seen good business class laptops that are a great budget buy. Lenovo thinkpads, HP Probooks, things of that nature. I snagged an HP Probook recently that had some nicks but otherwise flawless for less than 150$ USD on ebay and they tick all of Serato’s requirements for things like PnT and Serato video should I ever decide to pay and use them. I also almost never have 600$ on me at any one time, so spending that on a laptop that you’d have to sink more money into for a new battery if buying used, (Important if you travel on public transportation and want use your laptop while doing so) an SSD if you don’t have one on hand, and probably a ram upgrade unless you are able cannibalize a laptop that had better ram and an SSD you can re-format.

The only time so far I’ve ever had issues with my dj laptops is with windows, but since Linux sucks for djing (No support from any DJ program except MIXXX) and iOS is for macs only, I just stick with 8.1 for now as I can never find a legit copy of 7 and 10 was causing issues on my probook. I’ll probably also see about getting another SSD for my old DJ laptop for home use as I loved having the bigger screen (Probook 14″ vs Clevo T5100 15.4″) but hated the added weight and unnecessary numerical pad. Like you, I highly doubt I’ll ever play in front of 1000’s, but I’m not looking to either.

HP ProBooks are actually not Business Laptops, only the EliteBooks are. The ProBooks have the same crappy insides as the lowend lines in a little more eye appealing package.
Also since Lenovo took over they call anything ThinkPad there are huge differences in the lines of thinkpads and the Carbon Line costs you 2000+.
I am sorry to say in the end you always get what you pay for, PC manufacturers are just better to make you think it is the same thing as the CPU will actually be the same.

But as I said, hugley depends on your work environment.

But I can also asure you there is few things more tragic then when I witness a young boy called up from a pool party to a nice big club to do evening warmup when suddenly his laptop dies, there is this awkward silence until the clubs backup kicks in and that nice boy that displayed talent is then fired, crying like a girl “asking why” and getting the hard answer “well that was plain unprofessional”. With the hardest thing being that when that line falls, every other clubmanager in town will know.
That is why I am so in on this topic, as it can literally cost you years of your career when maybe you could earn a thousand a night easy if you got that gig (and that laptop will pay for itself in no time).
