Hey – it happens to every DJ, unless you are cheating and using a pre-mixed CD for your entire set and miming your mix.

The best thing to do is not to beat yourself up too much about it, but rather sit down and write down what went well that evening (I was on time. I was prepared, etc) and what did not go well (equipment failure, poor transitions, etc) and jot down some concrete ideas on actions you can take to make things better.

Also, if you can get constructive feedback from someone at the gig, or have them listen to your mix if you recorded it, and see if they notice anything amiss. Often times what sounds as a screw-up to the DJ really isn’t noticed by people on the dancefloor.

    Hope this helps!

It did, thanks. I did have two Dj friends with me they said it wasn’t as bad as I was making it out to be and it happens to all DJs. One said he graded the night as a A….due to the packed floor. He noted the one bad transition, and a set of 2 slow bpm songs, but other than that they were both very supportive.

I guess I had this bar raised so high in my mind because my prior time spinning there I killed it. I appreciate your reply, thank you.

I’ve only been doing this for 9 months, so I am trying to build a name for myself. I know I am still learning and this website and forum is truly awesome for any level DJ

Just do not take it personal. Such things happen, sometimes it is enough for one pimp that is the buddy of a manager or even the main barkeep to say something bad because he did not like one song…

It is nothing to get worried about, if you gave your best then you have nothing to worry, especially if the dancefloor was packed and people had a good time.

So again, do not take it personal, drink a beer and shelf it.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much and to called it a “bad gig” ,like you said the floor was packed correct ? When you felt discourage thinking about that night, just remembered the feeling you had when you saw the floor was packed ? What you felt ? Adrenaline rush right ? Yeah man keep up the good work and dont sweat it too much

The only ones that truely matter at the end of the are the people on the dancefloor. If they are sitting in their seats and looking at you glassy-eyed, you have problems. If they’re out there dancing and having a good time (and drinking some extra to compensate for all the sweating) then you are in the clear. Regardless of what managers/owners/whoever says.
