I’d probably look at iTunes and Amazon Music for starters.

Maybe hit up your local second hand music stores (if you have any) and seek out any CD compilations you can rip into files.

Hey! You’re brave to take on a job like this if you don’t have/know this music 🙂 , but I’ll help you out. I’m involved in Soul Train Jönköping (Sweden) and I am resident in a club where i play Soul/Funk/Disco several times/month since almost 3 years. I hope you’ve practiced your cut-mixing skills because not much of this music is easy to beat mix 😉 . Add/PM me on Facebook and we take it from there. https://www.facebook.com/dmkonsulten

I’ll admit that it is a skill I haven’t practiced for a while, but you could beat-mix this stuff on vinyl! Finger on the label and speed up/slow down the platter a little as the track was playing. It’s easier with CDJ style players and controllers of course. It DOES take some more effort, but hey, we are professionals, right?

    Dj’s Vantage/Peter/D-Jam,

Thank you all for the suggestions and advise. I am going to look for some old CD’s (hopefully in decent shape), and see what I can find. I’m not overly worried about beat mixing the set really, it’s just getting enough music to play through the night as I am the only one playing that night. The crowd will be my age (old as hell!), but it should be a blast! Peter, I will see you on facebook shortly…

    Thanks again,

    Karlton

I am playing friday at a wedding. The bride a 50-yo professor, the groom also a 60-yo academic. Family members from two totally different cultural areas of the country, friends in the couples ages and co-workers anywhere from 25-35. Guests from 3 or 4 countries.

With quite a few restrictions on what to play and what not.

I have all the music, that is not going to be the challenge. The challenge will be, as always, to pick those tunes that make the evening work for all/most of the guests and the happy couple.

    Will be interesting.

It sounds like a case for excellent crowd reading and interaction with the guests. I wouldn’t imagine it will be a typical “college gig” with the ages of the bride and groom being what they are, but you’ll do great. I try to over come most of my challenging jobs by just connecting with the crowd as much as I can and keeping in mind that having fun is universal. If I enjoy it so will most other people…

Best of luck on the job,

    Karlton

Thanks, with 39 years on the decks I think I will manage 😀

Honestly there are some samplers on iTunes from that era that have like 3-4 CDs worth of music and cost like 5-10 bucks. I think I purchased 2 or 3 of them and it got me covered with all the major tunes from that era.

Karlton, besides Terry’s good suggestion, I would recommend using Spotify, too, because there’re tons of playlists there that you can use to identify songs you might not remember right now (I speak as someone in his 50s that plays this stuff many times each year).

As for getting the files, as D-Jam said iTunes and Amazon are great choices.

However, if you’re giggibg on a regular basis, and have the necessary ways to document it, I would strongly suggest you become a member of the Digital Music Service (DMS) record pool, which has a good back catalog that includes files with DJ intros and outros and also short edits, re-drums and remixes.

Hi, my clientele is pretty much always 50 and above so I have some experience in this area. Spotify was a great tool because as has been pointed out, even though I am a Disco era girl… I have forgotten some of the great tunes…I found many great lists in the “party” – folder… “party of the Century” and Disco Beats. There are also tons of lists out there for top requested disco music or Most requested 70’s dance tunes. Many of these have bits you can listen to right on the site. Even with my crowd, I try to sneak in a few more contemporary songs now and then just to keep it a bit fresh…I figure if at my age, I like it and would dance to it, it doesn’t matter when it was recorded. Blurred Lines ( Clean version) , XXX’s & OOO’s, etc. I also troll the 80’s and 90’s for a few that are good…. if you’re having fun, they will and yes that crowd loves interaction…so it sounds like you are on the right track.

The DJ Intelligence website has some pretty decent TOP XXs lists. As well as a 200 most requested at weddings I think. Only problem with all these lists is that they are pretty much country specific, especially the older stuff. In Holland we were pretty US-centric, but still lots of other influences, like UK, Germany and Italy (Italo-Disco). If you look at UK charts for a time period, you will find there are lots of tracks that never made it into the Dutch charts. Play that at a party here and you will get stunned looks and people walking away to sit down.

Another good example is Cerrone – Love in C Minor. It is featured in many best disco tracks of all times (and in the top 10 usually!). This song never ever did anything here. So little so that I wonder if it was ever actually released here. So a song that would get people going in the US would be a wipe-out here.

That said, there are quite a few other sites that have best dance or disco music charts too, often grouped by decade. And while there is probably none that is the ACTUAL best chart, if you take three or four of the top 50 lists of a decade, you can come up with a common denominator list for that decade that will have you covered.

It’s as good a starting place as any. And thanks to Spotify and Youtube you can probably listen to all of them to select which one fit your style the best.

I appreciate all of the input that you all have given me. The search continues but I am making headway (thanks a million to Peter, you’re a life saver!), as well as everyone else. My set is starting to come together (nicely I think) and will continue over the next few weeks. This gig isn’t until June and I am just glad I’ve had the time and advise to get it right.
OBTW…I found a great track by D.C. Larue the other day that a DJ friend of mine here has. It’s named “Cathedrals”, it absolutely brought back to disco era for me! Also found some great Donna Summer trakcs and a few others too!

Thanks again, I’ll keep you all posted,

    Karlton

I use a lot of this type of music for my varied genre sets, and there is some great reading above… Thanks guys for the replies, and thanks to the Op for making this post! Keep shining folks… Isaiah
