Show your skills and why they should hire you.
The bar I DJ regulary at the moment had such a laptop DJ and they told me, “nah it is ok what he does”. Yes the people in the bar were semi-entertained but it was mostly background music for them.
I then told him: “Ok, well you give me 15min if I can get people to stand up and dance I get a gig and 20% more than he gets.”
The owner of course thought I was joking but he told me to do it, so I grabbed my controller from the car, hooked it up…. 15min later all the ladies were standing the room was pumping and the cocktails were flowing like water down the niagara falls… so I got the gig.

Sometimes you have to play it with some balls, do not feel sorry for yourself, ACT, take action and take matters in your own hand. It cannot get any worse can it?

Tery advice is right on the spot,
You just can’t sit in yur butt all day waiting for the stars to aligned them selves,
Go find a ladder, go outside, climb the ladder and align it yourself !

There is no reason to just abandoned what your heart desired, keeps at it, push push push and push harder,
I assumed you DJ ing out of your passion, right ?

I will take that advice and use it this weekend. I feel a ballsy move like that will get his attention. I basically said the same thing to him once asking for an hour and he said ‘my dj’s are under contract to play every weekend’. But I’m gonna keep trying and do what u did terry. And I know I could kill it too because we all have those dance floor fillers that we go to every 30mins or so in the night. I’ll just combine them all into a 15min mix and have the manager begging me to play for them. Thankyou terry for the idea.

I find myself in a similar situation. I do a lot of controllerism and to the few people who hear me (mostly the odd opening set, open decks nights, mixcloud) give me props. Alas, with so many DJs, a lack of a personal following locally, and a declining regular club scene in favor of big events and festivals…I can’t break the ice over my head. So I’m thinking production is the way to go.

Since my post has been published on the main page, i feel like a complete idiot and very embarrassed for what i have said and truly regret posting that. Now that i have realized what i have done wrong. let me explain the full situation.

I have been djing for a couple years like i said. came from overseas djing every weekend and having a blast doing it. I dj’d to fund that habit and my drift car i had. So when i came back here and it became very hard to find gigs i started losing faith. I would talk to the managers, become friends. become a very frequent customer at the clubs and just make myself look as best as possible with being polite to the bouncers, tipping waitresses, and getting to know the dj’s as best as possible. Ive been doing this for 5 months now with no luck. I have a steady set of followers here on this base already that know me as a dj and like my mixing. Heck, i even had the Chief master sergeant of the base ask me to dj for a base wide dorm party. I have connections here and they work pretty well. But I’m finding getting connections in a bigger city very hard.

So i have come to a dilemma of do i continue to try and get gigs and social market the heck out of myself, or do i put my main focus on trying to begin producing. Yes i could do both, but when i work 12hr shifts, school, and random bull#hit that comes up with the military. I only truly have time for one hobby at a time. Now i love dj’ing. It helped me get through some hard times and it helps me relax and relieve stress. I truly do love doing it. But I’m also finding myself wanting to get into producing more and more. My dream since i was a teenager years ago was to become a touring edm superstar. Now, that is very unrealistic but i have to try. So if that means i have to give up one love to begin another. I will do it.

So from reading that. What do you guys think i should do. Temporally put my love of djing to the side to produce. Or keep working my ass off to get the djing jobs i desperately crave?

Again. I’m sorry for coming off as an asshole in my post and seeming to dish on anyone who uses a laptop or sync or anything like that. I truly did not mean to offend you. So please forgive me for that one moment of assholeness.

Tried to reply to this on the main page but it disappeared so registered for the site. House music is about having fun. Keep playing even if its only for a little time during the week. Keep the interest in music up. This will stand you in good stead even if you move into production. People have different opinions on the best way to play. The only thing that matters is that others are dancing and you are having fun. You mentioned your dream to be an edm superstar, I don’t think anyone of them began with a hard nosed plan of world domination. The advice on this site is generally spot on, and is a good guide. You mentioned you had done a work related gig. While trying to break into the local scene why not organise a few more of these parties. Get a video done of the nights, edit the best bits against one of your mixes, put it on youtube etc and then play it to the promoters. Cant hurt and will be fun. Good luck.

No need to be embarrassed we all were in this situation once in our careers at least, that is why it made such a good topic for the blog.
