ParticipantGo with what you ve got. at the end of the day, it’s only announcing. not singing, it’s family and friends. you ll also find that fine tuning a microphone with EQ on a PA mixer makes a lot of difference. Also if you only got one microphone you want it wired and on a stand so people don’t pick it up and walk away. if you need to call people up, have one for yourself and one for the people doing speeches. I don’t know how long your gig is going to be, but keep in mind that wireless mikes also need batteries and rechargable ones dont last long. Personally, i would not bother with anything high quality or expensive if it’s just for announcements or for non singers/vocalists/professionals to use.

ModeratorWhat is (apart from a great party thanks to the dj of course) the most important part of so,ething like an anniversary or wedding? The speeches! You can be a good DJ, but if the guest(s) of honor and/or half of the other guest missed most of what was said, they won’t be happy.

ParticipantUPDATE: So the event I did this past Saturday went very well. It was for a relative’s baby shower and it served as a time for me to promote my business which is why I asked the question earlier about which microphone I should use. Well, I ran into an issue with the “back up” wired mic I’d bought for $30. It served its purpose, but I’m wondering if I should’ve went ahead and purchased a better mic such as a Shure or Sennheiser for $100 or so, or if my little ol $30 microphone did ok for the event. The reason I am bringing this up is because I heard a lot of rumbling noises whenever someone got up to present a game, make announcements, etc. while holding the mic stand or microphone at the base.
After reading a couple of articles, they both said that using a High Pass Filter may have eliminated such rumbling noises, and/or turning down the EQ’s low frequency. Well, I did have the low freq. set at 3 o’clock at the event, but I also noticed when setting up the mic for the first time I heard rumbling noises before touching the mixer’s EQ.
In any event, there was a time during the event when I wish I did have the wireless mic system, but I was able to get by. Next time, I will have a wireless mic system on deck, but it is what it is I guess.

ParticipantGood to hear it went well !
I imagined you get pays well also, so it’s time to get the mic that you really wanted 😀September 10, 2013 at 6:29 am #43970DJ Vintage
ModeratorOn the mic issue:
HPF = always on, if you have one. PA mixers do (all of them), DJ mixers usually don’t. Alternatively run low eq at -6 to -9 dB or so (use your ears).
EQ= for the rest of the EQ, only raise the mid slightly for enhanced audibility. That is where the bulk of spoken word is. There is nothing in the high ranges apart from s’s, noise and such. Leave it or cut slightly.
Rumbling = the cheaper the mic the more sensitive they are to handling noise. The better/more expensive mics have better suspension mechanisms for mounting the actual element. Even then you are liable to hear handling noise. It’s one of the reasons I suggested wireless (from a decent brand). They seem less vulnerable to handling noise. Finally, even the cable can contribute (and usually does) to the handling noise. Another argument FOR wireless mics that need to go round the room.Good to hear you had a good shower and the baby didn’t show up during your show. Although it would have been THE ultimate moment for a Jesus Pose if it had!

ParticipantThanks, Chuck. As usual your advice is right on and very valuable. *SMH* @ my little ol $30 mic. I’ll probably end up simply using it for a back up and buying a Shure SM58 with the on/off switch plus a wireless mic system. Secured another gig yesterday evening for another shower next month from one of the guests that attended the relative’s…LOL. Things are looking up.
