Honestly I would not buy into lighting, if your business does take up you will need professional lighting and the only way to get that (apart from spending thousands) is to rent it and include the rental fee in your fee.

As for controllers: The Mixtrack III is quite a good controller. If you want to expand you can easily add something like a reloop Neon and a few Serato FX packs to the mix. I would not upgrade from a midrange controller to another midrange controller. The more buttons you get from a SR you can easily get by adding the Neon.

Then when you have some more gigs under your belt, the gear will pay itself (for a decent wedding or mobile gig you should get at least 1k, minus 200 for rentals you still have 800 in your pocket).

The problem is that, as it’s the standard Mixtrack III, It’s not compatible with Serato. It only works with Virtual DJ unless I buy the full version of Serato which would allow me to keymap it as a MIDI controller and if I’m going to buy the full version, I’m thinking that I might as well get a new controller that supports it so that I’m not paying for the software twice. Thanks for the advice on the lighting though, I was kinda thinking the same thing as far as renting it.

You do not need to map anything. The Mixtrack III is already mapped within Serato, so is the Neon.
You just enter the license key, plug your controller in and it all works.
Many times Serato is on discount and you can get the full pack for under 100 bucks which is way less than any controller upgrade that is reasonable for you.

However if your heart is set on the upgrade which I can understand we all have some GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) I would save up for the SX as the SR is not that huge of an upgrade.

(Also the VDJ you got with your Mixtrack is not the Pro Version, to activate VDJ Pro features you would need to buy it and it costs a lot more than Serato.)

I’ve been trying to get my Mixtrack III to work in Serato but it doesn’t show up. I’ve gone onto their website as well and the only Mixtrack III listed on there is the Pro version, not the standard version. Am I missing something?

It will only work if you activate your license for it.

I can’t activate it because it doesn’t appear on the list of compatible hardware.

I think he is talking out the regular MT not the PRO (i.e. no sound card), in which case it would only work with a supported sound card?

Indeed I have asked Numark support and they say that the Mixtrack 3 and 3 Pro support different firmware and hence only the Pro version will work with Serato. That is a real shame.
