There are no rules … for starters 🙂

Having said that, it really depends on where you are going with your mix. Obviously if you are building up to a higher bpm climax you don’t want to go back. If you plan on hanging around the same bpm mark for a while and your next track is slower again (like another 123) then you could lower the playing track to 124 and bring the other one up to 124 too. And obviously if the next track is faster still, say 127 you want to bring that back to 125 for the mix since the playing track is already up. That’s what I do, but I know DJ’s that only go up, never down, so they would just raise the playing track even further to 127 and keep the new track at it’s original speed.

Again, not set in stone and everyone has his/her own way of doing things.

I almost always try and keep the dame BPM throughout the whole mix, but that’s just how I like to do things 😛

I know some DJ’s where their sets would almost always just build up to being faster and faster over the course of the mix.

That’s a luxury us mobile jocks don’t have. Even staying in the same genre is impossible 🙂

lol that “dame” was supposed to say “same”. Embarrassing yet kind of hilarious typo.

Even in a club set I love to fool around with BPM, it makes people more jittery and I feel it is less boring. 130 BPM for 2 hours is just a no no for me…

    Well, I’m usually at 175 – 180 for 2 hours :P.
    Plenty of excitement for me!

I get tired just THINKING of being somewhere with 175-180 going on for 2 hours!

My nights usually vary from 75 to 180, with the mainstay between 110 and 140. And with every break in the program (speeches, sketches, toasts, whatever), you can start another build up, climax, cool down session 🙂

Indeed 75 to 180 and floating between 110 and 140 is also what I like to do, but then I also like to mix genres and often get caught for example mixing house and trance, where some DJs still scream SACRILEGE! hehe
