ModeratorIt’s a double 12″ sub, which I am not too big of a fan of, the 15″ and especially 18″ have more low end (it’s about physics and the amount of air you can move). And a double 12 makes for a lot larger/heavier enclosure. Also the QSC doesn’t seem to have an active cross-over, so unless your EV’s do, which I think they don’t, so you’d need to get one of those too.
Not saying this is the one to get (although it’s awesome), but for comparison sake take a look at the Mackie HD1801 (same price as the qsc here). It has the active crossover, less amp power BUT higher max SPL (+3dB over the QSC and make no mistake that 3 dB is a lot) and better low frequency (38 vs 47 Hz or something). It’s smaller, probably less heavy although I didn’t check that.
Hope that helps a bit.

ParticipantThanks for the feedback, I’ve read some reviews for the Mackie HD 1801 and there weren’t many good reviews. Can someone recommend another active crossover sub?

ModeratorNot sure what reviews you read. I just checked the one on the HDA/HD1801 combo at Sound On Sound (anybody who’s in sound business knows the quality of this publication) and it there wasn’t a negative note about it. I can point you at a few more.
But more than that, I have been using the HD1801 – 2x HD1221 combo for the last 3 years or so and I can definitely vouch for the quality of the sub. In sound quality, in build quality and in raw power.
Add to that the sharp price point for them and you’ll be hard pressed to find (much) better unless you step up to the next quality level, which means at least a 50-100% increase in budget.
My advice, as with all things sound connected, find a place where you can listen to a few subs and do a/b comparisons on them.

Little quote:
“Sub wise, Mackie finally learned how to build a sub. It packs a lot of punch for it’s small size. Plenty of low extension, and a solid thump. They get loud, and stay clean all the way up to limit. If you try to push in the 35-40hz range you hit limit a lot faster and you can hear the drivers getting a little sloppy. But, other then that, they are very solid. Even into solid limit, they do not bottom out and they stay clean. I can hear some of the low lows go away as you push them harder, but it’s not bad at all. For a single 18 self powered box under $1,000, you’ll be hard pressed to find something better.”Greetinx.

ParticipantThink I’m going with the QSC Kw181 subwoofer…seems to be a great sub.

ParticipantI really hope you’re giving these subs a listen before pulling the trigger on purchasing. I’m not sure where you found negative reviews on the Mackie sub but either way, the Yamaha DSR118 is a killer sub as well (same price as Mackie). I have NEVER needed more bass than a single DSR118. Unless you’re doing gymnasium and larger gigs on a consistent basis, I don’t know why you’d need more power. As much as I love mine, if I could go back I’d actually get to yamaha 15″ subs just so I could pole mount both speakers above them.
You’ve gotta think about the look of your setup as well. When there’s no room to put the sub in front of my facade, I’ve had people ask “why is there an extra speaker on that side”. Just throwing it out there. Good luckMay 6, 2014 at 2:42 pm #2026803DJ Vintage
ModeratorHey Jmurph, it sounds to me like you had your mind made up about the Qsc’s already before you posted your question and you were just hoping to get a few confirmations on your decision.
Even if you are set on the Qsc’s, at least do yourself the favor of listening to a few subs in the same price range before buying. Brand, shape, logo and all that don’t produce the sound. The speaker being used to reproduce low end musical information is the only true measure.
