Looks damning, but to be fair a live PA in front of TV cameras is not a typical club gig. Guetta knows how to DJ, are you saying he doesn’t?

If you look @ this video. he doesn’t, also does nothing to hide it.
He is a good producer, but playing prerecorded mixes is not what the public expects.
They expect him to do live mixing on the spot.

e.g When you go to an live concert of your favorite artist, you show up at this concert (pay a lot of the tickets),
and you discover that he’s only playbacking the whole concert. How would you feel about that ?

Sorry to be cynical, but this means nothing if a crowd of “pretty” people will pack a venue for this. He could stand there with an iPod on shuffle, but if the club is full of people dancing and going nuts, then this won’t change. You’ll still see talented unknown DJs be ignored while “superstars” who put out big popular hits on Beatport and iTunes get major bookings.

NOW…I’m not saying you as a DJ shouldn’t try to be better, but understand that things now are about marketing and promotion. If you’re the one who can draw loads of people out to see you, then you win in this business. Plain and simple.

I just think DJs posting these videos are meaningless as long as these “fake DJs” can pack a room. I’ve seen Guetta play live on videos even and his DJing wasn’t anything really worth talking about…often times just slamming in tunes. However, he produces major hits, which is why people come out for him.

These are the facts of life…

I agree with D-Jam, people come out to see DJ’s like Guetta to hear the hit tracks & could care less about his DJ skills. I think this is one of those instances where you being in the DJ industry are looking at it differently than the majority looks at it.

He can DJ, but he lives in the land of pop music now, things are done differently there. It’s not what I’m into, but I’m not going to hate on him for that.

This is as old as it gets. Many live bands have many parts of their concerts coming from playback etc.
I could not care less if Guetta is a good DJ can do badass scratch routines and whatnot… he got famous with songs, he fills stadiums etc. that is what counts for the record companies and his agency. He definately made some right choices in how to promote himself and has excellent marketing working for him.
Also performing a pre-recorded mix is possibly just so that nothing can go wrong… it may not even be his choice, but he may be forced to use a playback by his agency… you (and I) will never know.

Becoming famous has nothing to do with skill. It is 90% luck, having the right profile, with a tune that fits what the record company is looking for and being in the right place at the right time, with a company willing to spend millions in promoting you. You prolly get rich faster entering the lottery, than with DJing, then you can easily give away for free 400,000 of your own singles and have a #1 hit in the US like Madonna…

guetta gets bad rap amongst “djs” but his live sets at festivals are pretty damn good.
