I learnt very quickly after a few gigs, all the majority of people at these events want to hear are songs they know. Stick to popular songs that people can sing and dance to, then late on in the night when people get sloppy, bring out some different things.

Ess Jay is absolutely right. Here’s how to do this as I’ve done plenty of high school events before. I actually started dj’ing when I was a sophmore in high school bc our Dj’s were terrible. Play all hits for the dancing portion and any type of line dance songs like the Cupid Shuffle and Teach me how to Dougie are great for when you start to feel them pulling away. As for dinner, I would absolutely suggest light songs like Ed Sheeran A Team, Maroon 5, John Mayer, Alicia Keys, etc. I have even thrown in some energy songs towards the end like some upbeat Chris Brown to kind of get them into the mood/have them dancing in their seats. Proms are awesome because music is their life, and they react like no other. If girls come up to you and request a song in a group, YOU PLAY THAT SONG. GIRLS DANCE/GUYS DANCE. Thats the name of the game

Remember: This Prom isn’t a club – its a bunch of high schoolers. they are not there for the vibe and new tunes, they are there for their friends and themselves. Play ALL the songs they know. I just got done playing an early prom and shamelessly played old Brittney spears and cotton eye’d joe. If your Dance-portion consists of 90% Top40 from the past 10 years, you’re honestly on the right path. I would stay away from dubstep for a prom – its not as big as we all seem to think it is, and the 70/140BPM variety is pretty undance-able.

Important – have good slow dance songs (Wanted, Forever Young) – ALWAYS have a banger that EVERYONE knows lined up. Play the banger directly after the slow dance song. Whenever you bring the energy level down, make sure to jack it right back up again.

If you mis-read the crowd and select a song that clear-ish-es the dance floor, play a line dance song RIGHT after. Depending on when the Prom ends, play Sandstorm by Darude with 1hour left to go – that song always sends the high schoolers into a frenzy and in the mood to go bonkers for the last hour.

    GOOD LUCK =)
