    1) Generally I’ll listen to a great deal of music, and first start humming to myself. I’ll modify the melody a little, and then keep tweaking it until it bears no resemblance to the original (outside of key).
    2) Generally I program my own sounds/kits, but use a lot of 808s and 909s as the base for drums. As far as presets I can recall aggressor, air of detuned lead, love lead (or something like that) and tribute to ivor from massive as sounds I’ve enjoyed.
    3) Massive is by far my favorite synth, with Absynth taking a close second. As far as drum composing/programming, I will say Drumazon is my go-to. I haven’t mastered or perfectly mixed any of my tracks yet (it’s a whole damn art in-and-of itself) but I mainly work on hardstyle, which requires some serious kick layering , reversed bass, and punchy leads. Massive has been amazing for lead/bass work.

I have the first maschien mikro and I love it. Well first off I always think of what kind of genre I want the song to be in (or close too). Then I think of the energy, bpm, mood of the song I want to do. Really helpful to keep you focused and stay on track

    1) I usually start with drums and just play around with different patterns till I come up with a couple patterns I like. I find that the drums are the back bone of the track so I like to start there cause It gives a solid foundation to work off of. Sometimes a nice drum pattern or melody will come up in my head or I kind of hear a soudn that might go nice. At this stage theres alot of
    experimenting going on.
    2) My favourite kits are in Drop squad. More my style and i find the sounds are more extreme and eerie.
    3) I have really started to like Razor. It sounds so pure and warm. Usually make my meolodies/basslines with it. Pretty simple to use but packs alot of power.

Mostly do the same as Michael here.
I do the bottom 2 lines with drums and then play around till I find a beat that I like.
Then I start adding the rest and if ready export the whole thing. Maybe do some post production in Logic and spice ups…

I hear that the maschine internal stock sounds are good enough to production. Is that the general consensus?

Depends on what genre of music, but generally yes. I still have to tweak to get what I want, but hardstyle’s always been a bitch in terms of synth programming.

The basic sound library that you get with the purchase is OK, but of course they needed to include sounds, synths, drums, etc. that will cater to the more commercial crowd.
So for more specific genres or genres that are more out of the line of what is commercial, you might have to either tweak the sounds you get (which you can) or buy packages for that genre. Of course you can also import your own sounds and find samples on various download sites that you might want to use.

Maschine is pretty awesome and has become my sketch pad since I got it (Mikro 1). The stocks are very good, but as others have said to find your center you need to tweak em. I like to go for melodies first because for me it takes the longest. I’ve found that 4-6 tracks of orchestration that I’m really vibing with gets me really hype once I add drums in the end! But the same isn’t true if I start with drums. I end up scrapping loads of stuff because it just doesn’t enhance what I have already. Just remember to enhance what you do track by track and scrap it the moment it looses shine.
